Case: How to Assemble a Unity Development Team, or Networking Rules! Part 2 🔥 The candidate selected for Lead Unity Developer role in the previous part successfully passed the probation period, and shortly after, the client once again returned to us for help with a new Unity developer, as it was time to expand the team. This time, we needed to find a strong middle developer with experience working in a team of developers (not just a solo player), who would be ready to quickly integrate into the work and pace of the startup. Let's not forget the key requirement for soft skills. Strategy: We decided to start specifically with publications on job sites, game dev channels, and Unity-specific channels in our favorite Telegram. The job description and project were very appealing (as any description our team works on 🤩 ). Needless to say, the number of responses exceeded a hundred within the first few days? In the end, there were many more, with quite a few responses coming in long after the vacancy was closed :) Fortunately, we are very experienced in high-speed filtering of a large stream of candidates (by the way, we have/will have a separate case on this). We interviewed 15 great candidates within a week, 9 of whom reached the founder's review, and 6 made it to the final interview with him. 🌐 Networking played a role again – the recruiter happened to get a lead on a candidate who wasn't actively looking but decided to try himself after reviewing the job description. The first pool of excellent candidates was gathered quickly, and he was the last in it. The founder was determined to close the vacancy quickly. And so it happened. Guess who got an offer an hour after the final interview? We managed to do it exactly in 2 weeks and 1 day – from receiving the request to the candidate accepting the offer. Impressive? Important! No favoritism was involved in this case! We just want to emphasize how great it is to have a large, active, and responsive network and how cool it can accelerate closures! Do you agree? Share your thoughts on this 😉

Unity developers, be careful, Stream.Write can cost you a lot of garbage. Found this tricky overload when I was working with large DeflateStreams. Not exactly in Mono implementation, but the same logic has proven by Profiler. If it's OK for .NET applications, so far I haven't met a Unity developer who would be happy with the extra memory in internal pools. So, use basic array overload instead of ReadOnlySpan and be happy. 😉 Source: https://lnkd.in/dBAyEUdH #unity #unity3d #gamedev #development #optimization

I want to wish all developers a Happy New Year and present a small article on the topic of what skills a good Unity developer needs. Becoming a proficient Unity developer requires more than just a basic understanding of the platform. Here are the key skills that can elevate your Unity development journey: 1. Proficiency in C#: The backbone of Unity development lies in C#. A strong grasp of this programming language is essential for writing scripts, implementing game logic, and creating interactive experiences within Unity. Good developers know C# very well and far beyond engine interactions. Be sure to learn asynchronous programming, popular libraries, patterns - it can all come in handy at some point in your career and will definitely make you a more useful employee. 2. Unity Editor Proficiency: Familiarity with the Unity Editor is a must. Understanding how to navigate the interface, manipulate game objects, set up scenes, and use components effectively streamlines the development process. Try to solve some problems using the engine, learn editor programming, work with various Unity packages such as Cinemachine, Probuilder and others. 3. Problem-Solving and Debugging: Unity developers often encounter bugs and challenges. The ability to troubleshoot issues systematically, debug effectively, and find creative solutions is invaluable. You should know all debugging techniques in the editor and on the device. Profiling, memory control, displaying device logs and more. 4. Knowledge of Mathematics and Physics: Game development frequently involves physics simulations, animations, and interactions. A solid understanding of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and calculus, is advantageous. 5. Collaboration and Communication: Working in teams is common in game development. Strong communication skills, the ability to collaborate effectively, and an understanding of version control systems enhance productivity and project success. This is by no means everything a good developer should know, but it's the foundation on which you can start building your dream career. Have a great holiday season everyone and may the next year be one of the best in your career!

UI Engineering | Front-end | JavaScript | React | FrontOps | PWA | Design Systems | Web Accessibility | Senior Software Engineer
Totally right, but the problem is not with developers, the problem is with the labor market. If you go to an interview, 90 percent of the time you will be asked #Angular, #React, Unity, not #JS #CSS #HTML and OpenGL/WebGL. In contrast, BigTech companies, which create a monopoly on tools, are the only ones who hire and interview without citing the high level of tools. #Google and #Facebook are not interested in your knowledge of React and Angular, they are interested in your knowledge of #ComputerScience #Programming and #WebFundamentals.
The 3D guy | Entrepreneur | Public Speaker | Building the best staff augmentation company in the region.
I think the software industry has gone wrong. We have been hyper-specialising developers into specific technologies having them lack fundamentals. This way we have put power on the hands of big technology companies who actually control the future of the industry. Let's look at Unity3D for example. In the past 19 years it has grown to be the go-to technology for 3D developers. Now with the dubious business model changes, thousands of Unity developers are contemplating changing the engine with another one. However, professions are built around it and shifting is easier said than done. So it's better to be a 3D developer than a Unity3D developer. Having low-level skills allows you to translate them easily into specialized technologies. The reverse is not true. So what will happen if Facebook decides to put a price-tag on React? What will happen if Google does the same with Angular? If you are to hyper-specialize, do so in low-level technologies. It's the kind of knowledge that will serve you both in the short and the long term. #careers #developers #softwaredevelopment
