𝐵𝑎ℎ𝑎𝑟 𝑠𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑘ℎ𝑛𝑒 𝑘𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑦𝑒, ℎ𝑢𝑚 𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟 𝑠𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑏𝑎𝑑 ℎ𝑜 𝑟𝑎ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑖. (In order to look beautiful from the outside, we're destroying ourselves from the inside.) Sad, but true. The trend of fast fashion is killing us and our environment. Despite its growing concerns, fast fashion remains a dominant force in the global fashion industry due to its ability to deliver affordable, trendy clothing quickly. While there has been a rise in demand for more sustainable and ethical alternatives, the adoption of fast fashion doesn't seem to decline. From 2023 to 2024, the industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.5%, and by 2028 is projected to reach USD 260Bn. The impact of human greed on the environment is not a new issue, and yet we manage to find new ways to destroy ourselves. And for what, a little more money? We need to now take collective action as a society against this practice of using and dumping clothes and go back to sustainable and practical fashion practices instead. Buy only what you need, and dispose of clothes only after you have used them sufficiently, i.e., if they don't fit you anymore or get worn out. Alternatively, you can always donate. I hope we realize the graveness of this situation and that the fast fashion industry never achieves the above-projected figures. I applaud these young people who are making videos on real issues. The sooner we learn and make conscious efforts to change ourselves, the better it will be for us. Please remember, we do not need to save the Earth; the planet will survive. Ngozi Okaro, Executive Director of Custom Collaborative, recently shared her insights in the Boston Globe Media Opinion Series, Not so fast, fashion - How to be Fashionable and Equitable while Saving the Planet from Climate Change. Reflecting on her experiences, she recounted a powerful conversation with a woman from Angola with whom she collaborated years ago. "She said to me that she'd never heard of sustainability until she came to Custom Collaborative," Okaro mentioned, emphasizing the transformative impact of their work in introducing sustainable fashion to individuals from diverse backgrounds. "She said, 'This is what we do and what we have been doing at home all the time, we just don't have a name for it.'" Highlighting the longstanding sustainability practices within Indigenous communities worldwide, Okaro emphasized, "Indigenous people have been stewards of fashion sustainability for a long time. The industry needs to bring in and learn from Indigenous communities," she stressed, advocating for inclusivity in decision-making positions throughout the industry, from leadership roles to manufacturing. Addressing the barriers marginalized individuals face, Okaro discussed Custom Collaborative's innovative approach of paying stipends to participants. "Our program is free, but we recognize that we are working with people who are resource-challenged," she explained. "We pay for them to be able to participate with a stipend and transportation costs. The collaboration between Diane von Furstenberg and Lenzing Group, announced today, highlights a vital truth: the fashion industry must prioritize sustainability. As incredible as this news is, it also serves as a reminder of how much work remains. DVF's commitment to using Lenzing fibers from sustainably managed wood sources like #Tencel and #LenzingEcovero for their flagship collection is definitely a positive step. However, I can't help but wonder: why isn't sustainable sourcing the standard rather than the exception? The fashion industry must move beyond token gestures and embrace comprehensive, sustainable practices throughout—not only in celebratory or capsule collections. As leaders, we must advocate for systemic change and hold ourselves accountable. This partnership should inspire us to reflect on our own practices.
