As the fashion industry marches towards sustainability, the spotlight is on raw materials like never before. With over 35 new sustainability-linked regulations on the horizon and global climate targets pressing, brands are feeling the heat to prioritize eco-friendly materials.🌿✨ But here's the challenge: while brands are making ambitious pledges to reduce their climate impact, the demand for lower-impact materials is outstripping the current supply. In fact, preferred raw materials only accounted for about 19% of total global production in 2021. 👗 This "materials gap" isn't just a hurdle; it's a looming threat to the industry's bottom line. Without a united effort to invest in sustainable materials, brands risk regulatory noncompliance, disrupted supply chains, and missed climate targets. 📉 The solution? Brands must act now to secure preferred raw materials, not just to meet regulatory requirements, but to future-proof their business models. Investing in sustainable materials today could unlock a $100 million opportunity over five years for a midsize fashion brand, with a potential net profit uplift of 6%. 📈 Our portfolio company’s SQIM's innovative approach to material production is a game-changer in the fashion industry's quest for sustainability. By partnering with fungi to ferment materials, SQIM taps into natural technologies that promote regeneration and responsibility. 🍄 SQIM's brand "ephea" delivers flexible mycelium materials that revolutionize values, functionality, and opportunities for fashion and beyond. These materials offer brands a sustainable alternative to conventional raw materials, aligning with the industry's growing demand for eco-friendly options. ♻️ By reducing reliance on conventional virgin materials and embracing sustainable alternatives, brands can not only boost profits but also drive positive change throughout the supply chain. It's time to shift gears, invest in sustainability, and pave the way for a greener future in fashion. 🌱👖 Do you want to know more about sustainable raw materials and their power to drive profitability and sustainability? Sustainable Fashion: Beyond the Buzzwords Interesting article found in Forbes “Sustainability in fashion is no longer a trend, it's essential”. Business & Sustainability Aligned: Sustainable practices aren't just good for the planet, they're good for business. They improve #efficiency, reduce #waste, and strengthen supply chains. Studies show sustainable companies outperform financially. Closing the Gap: Fashion needs to bridge the gap between business goals and environmental needs. Leaders must prioritize long-term sustainability alongside short-term profits. Focus Areas: Reports like "Scaling Sustainability Solutions in Fashion" outline nine key areas for improvement across retail operations, from materials to marketing. Innovation is Key: Exciting developments like seaweed-based fabrics, algae dyes, and AI-powered recycling are paving the way for a more sustainable future. Stories & statistics of Transformation in the fashion industry. The fashion industry has come to realize the environmental impact of its practices, leading to a surge in sustainable development initiatives. Designers and brands are embracing innovative techniques such as upcycling, recycling, and using organic or low-impact materials. For instance, companies like Patagonia and Eileen Fisher have pioneered sustainable practices by creating garments from recycled materials and investing in #fairtrade production. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the fashion industry produces 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, which is more than the combined emissions of international flights and maritime shipping. Statistics: The Textile Exchange reported that the use of organic cotton increased by 56% from 2017 to 2019, reflecting a growing demand for #sustainable materials. The Global Fashion Agenda reported that the adoption of sustainable materials by 100 leading sustainable fashion brands increased by 36% from 2017 to 2019. McKinsey estimated that the sustainable fashion market could reach a value of $350 billion by 2025 Now the question is how well do you tell the story of your commitment to sustainability/ESG? This is the defining question for 2024 — not just for your business, but every business Sustainability stories and commitment are narratives that showcase the brand’s sustainability and ethics journey, achievements, challenges, and plans. Sustainability stories should be authentic, inspiring, and engaging, covering topics such as materials, ingredients, origin, impact, innovation, collaboration, and education. 📣 Empowering Fashion for a Greener Tomorrow 📢 Reducing carbon footprint issues in the garment industry is crucial in my view. 🌍 As a responsible consumer, I prefer to support brands that prioritize sustainability and environmental consciousness. I believe we must take action to mitigate the impact of the fashion industry on the environment due to its contribution to global carbon emissions. In my experience, one effective way to address this issue is by raising awareness. Many people are unaware of the significant role the fashion industry plays in climate change. To find solutions and drive change, consumers, brands, and policymakers must be educated about the environmental consequences of their choices. 📢 As per my experience, promoting sustainable fashion practices is another key strategy. This involves using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste in the production process, and ensuring ethical labor practices. Many forward-thinking companies have already made strides in this direction, setting positive examples for the industry. ♻️ To improve the situation, we need to ask ourselves two critical questions: How can we make sustainable fashion more affordable and accessible to a wider audience? What innovative technologies can be harnessed to minimize the environmental impact of clothing production? Your insights are invaluable, and I invite you to share your thoughts in the comments and spread the word. Let's work together to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future for the fashion industry. 💬 What ideas do you have for making sustainable fashion more affordable? Global 🌎 fashion accounts for 3-8% of total greenhouse gas emissions? 🌿 Yet, many brands are struggling to keep pace with their decarbonization commitments. 😓 Challenge: Brands need to accelerate abatement action to meet their 2030 targets. Solution: Prioritize green materials, collaborate across the ecosystem, and create consumer-facing offers. 🌱 Six steps recommended by McKinsey & Company 1. Create commercial value from your sustainability strides 2. Focus on the big two: Material transition and tier-two-supplier energy transition 3. Build a carefully prioritized, robust road map 4.
