For one, it's an environmentally friendly choice that helps reduce waste and the demand for new production. Plus, shopping secondhand is a budget-friendly option that allows shoppers to find high-quality items at a fraction of the cost of new ones. Thrifted gifts often come with interesting histories too, which adds a unique touch. But that's not all – shopping at secondhand stores is a great way to support community and mission-driven businesses. These stores are usually on a mission, and by shopping there, customers contribute to the success of local employment and community development. And let's not forget that secondhand gifts have a story to tell. Whether it's an old hard-to-find book or a handbag with a history, these items carry sentimental value and create cherished moments. With all these benefits, it's no wonder why more and more people are heading to stores like Goodwill, Habitat ReStore, Salvation Army, and more to find the perfect gift. As we continue to move towards a more circular economy, I believe that secondhand organizations should find ways to broaden their reach to this era of customers through e-commerce channels. Why are we all paying more for the same products? I recently noticed a change in a family's shopping habits. They used to visit our local kirana store and neighborhood barber to save money. But now, we order groceries from Zepto and book haircuts through Urban Company. Why? Because these branded services save us time and reduce the stress of decision-making. The convenience and reliability they offer have become worth the extra cost. The world is becoming increasingly labeled, branded, and organized in every sector. Brands are being built upon each item: - Lunchbox for home food - Bowl 99 for rice bowls - Burger King for burgers - Zepto for groceries - Urban Company for house helpers - Porter for moving items Each product is specifically designed to solve a particular problem, making it easier for consumers to make quick decisions. A local hair salon might charge less than an Urban Company stylist, and a kirana store might be cheaper than Zepto. But consumers are evolving, seeking fewer decisions and more convenience. I see a clear opportunity to build here is to go nd a well-selling, yet unbranded or unorganized product, and you’ve struck gold. In today’s world, it’s more advantageous to be known for one thing than to try and do it all. Pick one thing, build a brand around it, and make consumers think of your brand when they think of that product. Think Google and Xerox—they became synonymous with their products. But it’s also important remember, You get paid based on proportion of value you create. Mourning the loss of Paperchase As I was making my way into Kings Cross station from the tube I still expected the bright, shiny, inviting store to be there. Paperchase. The bright beacon of design and excitement. Then it dawned on me. I’m still mourning the loss of Paperchase. Nearly a year on and it still makes me sad that the stores and the brand (as it was) has gone. Yes, I know the Paperchase brand has come back to life through Tesco but there are some things that have been lost that connected me to the brand; 🏙 it’s not in our town and city centres as a fun and funky beacon of delight for any occasion 🚂 it’s not in travel locations to really help consumers achieve those moments of ‘yes I got a fab card’ or ‘I don’t want to forget about it’ ✏ The range is significantly smaller and I’m desperate for more The designs so far are focused around a central theme, what I’ve seen is mostly ‘rainbows’ and seemingly one colour scheme 🏪 Selfishly, it’s not in a Tesco store anywhere near me and I’m in a major city So there you have it. I crave the design, the fun, the colour (that isn’t only rainbows) and my reference point for cards, gifting and newness isn’t there any longer. Is there a gap in the market. In my opinion yes. Yes, there are brands like FUNKYPIGEON.COM LIMITED, Papier plus loads of smaller, indie brands but they all offer slightly different propositions that doesn’t quite hit the spot. It’s not fulling the same needs from a design and cost perspective. Can it be profitable and successful? I’m sure someone could. I’d love to see the brand flourish under the Tesco family but to make this happen it will need broader distribution in both physical stores and online channels, a broader range plus going back to this amazing design routes that get consumers excited.
