The title of this NYT article says it all! The ad industry thrives on innovation fueled by diversity. Diverse teams bring fresh perspectives crucial for success. Yet, the lack of diversity in agencies, especially for Black talent, remains disheartening. In 2019, I launched Elevate, a leadership program for rising Black women talent. This year, I have had the honor of partnering on a new program focusing on elevating Black men in advertising. However, the industry-wide issue persists - a lack of sponsorship and investment in Black talent. Without sustained commitment, diversity initiatives falter when leaders championing these efforts leave or change roles. On this day that we are celebrating love, I want to give flowers to Ericka Hines, JD, the writer of The Black Women Thriving report and founder of Every Level Leadership. https://buff.ly/3wjnCZp When I read Ericka's research report about Black women at work and what companies can do to ensure Black women thrive, it felt like it was one big love letter to Black women. This report does such a wonderful job of both telling the stories of our current reality and the harm it causes AND painting a picture of what could be different at work. The report calls on organizations and leaders to de-bias performance management and promotion process, provide more developmental access for Black women, and to unlearn harmful stereotypes that are the source of many of the micro-aggressions and discrimination Black women experience at work, among other recommendations. Ericka gives voice to the desire of transforming our workplaces where we can truly thrive. "Our lives outside the workplace are full of meaning, community, and joy. That is where we experience thriving. We deserve the same at work. Everyone does." I agree wholeheartedly. This #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm celebrating 29 Black women who have influenced me through the ways they pursue their own liberation. Ah the #GenderPayGap so much fun to be squeezed out of this Santa Baby. Early reports are in and An Post are nailing it again, congratulations all, it takes a village, or a whole organisational approach to create WorkEqual cultures. Lidl Ireland are making great strides with a clear understanding that more women in leadership is a winning strategy. I recently had a conversation with a senior leader in a very particulate sector that universally struggles to retain women into leadership roles. It’s one of those ‘cut and thrust’ ‘I want it now’ sectors, you know the ones. It was explained to me that when a woman goes to a four day week it creates big issues around client expectation in an instant gratification culture. Either the clients need are left unmet or the woman has to jump to it on her day off. I asked how many men are on four day weeks. The answer. None. And here we have the problem. We cannot foster cultures of equity when people are playing by different rules of engagement. Let’s play it out, the men in the team choose to avail of four day weeks. Suddenly the client expectations have to change. Your shareholders know that broken system has to be fixed or your #CSRDtargets will not be met. In fact, I bet some of your shareholders are also your demanding clients.
