Are You Listening? Is the headline of our first-ever issues focused survey with 600+ girls ages 7-12 across 47 states participating. As a platform for Generation Alpha girls, Rebel Girls is listening. If we want to help raise the most confident generation of girls, we need to advocate for policies that help foster an environment for girls to grow up safe, strong, and able to become their most awesome selves. As we are in an election cycle here in the US, we thought this was a fine time to check in with this generation, and to amplify girls' voices around voting, issues and what they expect from the next President of the United States. “I don’t want to get shot at school, and that’s something I worry about all the time … School should be my safe space.” That’s what a 9 year old girl from Pennsylvania told us when asked what issues matter to her most.  https://lnkd.in/gthtcDaj Our findings were both expected (Gen A girls are passionate and civically minded with 88% saying they plan to vote when they turn 18) and also clear (school safety was overwhelmingly the #1 issue, followed by gun control).  Out of the mouths of babes … Their words for the next President were humbling, pure, and simple: “I want you to know I am praying for you”, “Why can’t we all get along? Kindness matters.”, “Good luck and do your best!”.  Our infographic - released publicly this morning - details more of our survey findings and responses. We encourage you to share it with your friends, community, and other girl advocates. In the coming days, weeks, and months, we’ll continue to share data from our Gen Alpha Election 2024 survey. We’re proud to have completed this survey alongside Her Campus Media, who simultaneously reached 300+ Gen Z women. The Center for Justice Innovation recently published a study that explored why young residents in Crown Heights Brooklyn carried guns. The researchers found that many did so in part to fulfill material needs. Most had been pushed out of the mainstream economy, and had turned to illegal activities to make money, putting them at risk of gun violence. Reducing gun carrying practices, the researchers argue, requires giving those at risk access to the mainstream economy through educational and job opportunities. “What you hear a lot, especially for gun carriers… is don’t do this, don’t do that, put that down, stop doing this, don’t don’t don’t don’t. And there’s never here: here’s what you can do, here’s what I have for you. Here’s how I’m going to help you,” said Elise White, the study’s principal investigator. ALL TRUE, must-read... 1/ Now I know that questions like these are about as interesting to you as a tutorial on gun safety, an explanation of how Easter dates fluctuate year to year and a thesaurus, but you see, I’ve long since stopped giving a fuck, so I’m gonna ask it anyway. And this isn’t really about you answering as much it is about me pointing out your culture war ridiculousness, so if you’re able to, and yer not too busy shooting up beer cans or rage-jerking to Tucker Carlson’s latest rants about unsexy candy characters in comfortable shoes, please do read along. If not, no worries, I’m still gonna say what needs to be said. So here’s what I want to know - what exactly are Republicans FOR these days? What are they offering? What are they promising? What are they giving you? Because it’s not infrastructure, the Dems did that. It’s not healthcare, which the Dems did too. It’s not all the other stuff the Dems are doing like lowering the cost of your insulin or lowering your taxes, it’s not creating jobs, not bringing manufacturing back, not honoring our vets, not actually “backing the blue” or “supporting the troops”, it’s not ending the opioid crisis, addressing the border, making Mexico pay for the wall, not lowering unemployment, raising wages, improving maternal care, feeding starving children, not keeping books on shelves, keeping the planet green, keeping you safe at work, protecting social security or growing the GDP, it’s not protecting your reproductive rights, your access to IVF and contraception, protecting Democracy abroad and it’s sure as shit not protecting your kids from gun violence at school. When a bridge collapses after a ship collision and six workers die, they blame DEI. When a woman is killed they blame the border. When a movie theatre gets shot up they blame “mental health.” When a long-standing day of visibility for a group of people who pose no harm to them outside of the fact that they simply want to live their authentic lives, coincides with Easter, they blame “blasphemy.” They say America sucks, that our economy is in ruins, and that our streets are rife with more crime than ever, when none of that’s true. They say prices are too high, but vote against stopping gouging, that our roads are in disrepair, but then vote against fixing them, and that our border is in crisis, while refusing to even vote on a bill THEY themselves demanded and co-wrote. They’re not doing a damn thing about the kitchen table issues you think about every single night. In fact, they’re telling you that they’re coming for the shit you rely on like affordable healthcare, access to IVF and contraception, they’re telling you they are coming for the social security you have been paying into. 2/ in first comment.

Along with the Ad Council Research Institute, I'm honored to launch a compilation report detailing the findings of two independent studies of the public’s views on the impact of gun violence on children and what can be done to reduce it. The new report includes findings from a mixed-method qualitative study of 74 participants, and a quantitative survey of over 3,000 respondents. The big picture? Americans are more alike than they are different when it comes to beliefs about gun violence’s impact on children and how to reduce it - including gun safety responsibility, education, and the overwhelming need to reduce the impact of gun violence on children and teens. By engaging with local stakeholders, including youth, and providing resources and support, we enable them to take ownership of initiatives aimed at reducing gun violence and promoting safer environments. We have been dealing with gunshot wounds for more than 500 years (it’s not as new as you think). The physical and emotional consequences of getting shot are well known. But we are only beginning to understand the impact of chronic, indirect exposure to criminal gunfire, especially on kids. Credible research suggests it can be severe and lasting. #publicsafety #communityimpact #gunviolenceprevention

For me, today is not about pink hearts and flowers. Today is the sixth anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The high school I attended. The high school that, after I graduated (the same year as Columbine), underwent a massive transformation in security protocol. A security protocol that I would point out as “insanely over the top” for all the years leading up to the moment when that protocol failed. A failure that resulted in seventeen deaths: 14 children, three adults, including one of my classmates who had returned as a football coach. But this failure was never about security. It was always about gun access. Today is a reminder that this country prioritizes guns over humans. Gun violence is a clear public health issue – a leading cause of premature death, killing more than 38,000 people a year. Gun violence should also be considered a public health issue for its effects on stress load. Especially for parents. Some parents experience the very real psychological stress of day-to-day gun violence in their community. Some parents experience the very real psychological stress of potential gun violence when sending their child(ren) to school in a country where even a horrific event like Sandy Hook results in the gun lobby doubling down, allowing for the Uvalde attack ten years later. A federal ban on assault weapons was blocked by Senate Republicans in December, yet parents across the country, across the political spectrum, know the stress of a school hours text message that could contain a worst fear. We live in a country with a real possibility of tragedy. Unnecessary tragedy.
