NEW: Healthcare deals are finally picking up again after a funding slump. And those deals — to the relief of many VCs — don't look like they did before the downturn. In 2021, some healthcare startups getting funded had little to no revenue, minimal market traction, or hadn't proved their ability to significantly help patients. Investors have higher standards now, and they're writing smaller checks at lower valuation multiples. But there's one area of healthcare that's making an exception — artificial intelligence. In my latest for Business Insider, here's how healthcare AI deals are bucking the industry's new normal, and what types of healthcare AI startups are bound to get more VC cash: https://lnkd.in/euBSHf4u (Thanks so much to Scott Barclay, Nina Achadjian, Todd Cozzens, Garheng Kong, and Andrew Arruda for these great insights!!)
Healthcare startup valuations are coming back to earth — except in AI. Here's what investors are pouring money into.

Abridge, an AI medical scribe startup, is raising $50M+ just 4 months after their last round in October 2023. VCs are betting on AI to manage medical docs & combat provider burnout. There seems to be a lot of activity in the AI transcription space, specifically around healthcare. There is definitely value in these services and a sufficiently high barrier to entry around HIPPA for general-purpose models. Congrats to #Abdridge. But at some point, we'll see some consolidation as I think the limiting factor will come down to the cost of #compute. Until then, it's a race #digitalhealth #AI #healthcare #VC #PE BI/Paywall: https://buff.ly/42FPN0s

Let's dive in! 🌐 AI in Healthcare: It's no news that Artificial Intelligence is making waves, but did you know venture firms are increasingly investing in AI-powered healthcare startups? 🔍 The Big Players: Andreessen Horowitz has recently co-led a whopping $200 million funding for Genesis Therapeutics, an AI-based drug discovery company. Other giants like General Catalyst, Menlo Ventures, and Lux Capital are also in the game. This momentum mirrors the enthusiasm of tech behemoths like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. 📊 The Current Landscape: While overall AI startup funding has spiked, AI in healthcare seems to be a tad behind last year's numbers. Yet, the focus remains intact on three promising arenas: Drug discovery 🧪 Paperwork automation 📄 Diagnoses 🩺 🚧 Challenges & Opportunities: The healthcare realm isn't without its hurdles - regulations and ingrained practices. But this hasn't deterred the optimism. Companies like Ambience Healthcare are harnessing AI for clinical notes, while others like Hippocratic AI are creating specialized LLMs for tasks such as patient instructions. 📣 What's Buzzing in Healthcare: HCA Healthcare is venturing into generative AI for emergency departments, and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Cross is expanding its AI-powered virtual health plan. With minimal regulation around the training of AI models — it’s still kind of the Wild West out there in health AI land. To protect your business and yourself from future legislation, class action lawsuits, civil liability, and criminal prosecution, getting a certification that the training data is in fact legally deidentified under HIPPA and not simply tokenized, hashed or anonymized will be a critical step in minimizing future legislative and legal risks. For more on the differences and cost benefit analysis of simply redacting PHI, anonimizing, or legally deidentifying your assets, HMU and we can help you explore whether you’re opening yourself to risks or not and the right way to insulate the important work you’re doing.

ENVISIONING the future of innovation and AI: The Sharp HealthCare ENVISION campaign is expanding -- we are creating the Sharp Advanced Analytics and AI Institute (A3). The health care industry continues to experience rapid transformation, and no change is more imminent than the potential for artificial intelligence (AI). In response, Sharp Ventures is launching the Sharp A3 Institute to further explore how AI can improve care. Through the leadership of Kelly J. Ko, PhD, Rick LeMoine, and Jon McManus, the institute will: • Deploy best-in-class technology at scale to maximize the impact of AI in clinical and administrative settings. • Serve as a regional hub to better understand the impact of AI on health care from the perspectives of patients, providers and the community. • Transform health care delivery through the creation of commercial products and services to serve San Diego and beyond. The institute will invest directly with early-stage companies that align with Sharp’s core strengths, notably in data analytics and digital health, and aims to establish an endowed innovation fund for opportunities focused on balancing the potential of AI and the delivery of health care. Foundation, private and venture philanthropy will play a key role in helping bring the institute to life. The ENVISION campaign will support the growth, development and operation of the institute, the Sharp A3 early-stage investment program, software development, research, and the creation and growth of an endowed innovation fund. https://lnkd.in/ginamxC3 #sharphealthcare #innovation #sharpventures #envision #sandiego #ai
