The idea of the 4-day work week is gaining in popularity and studies are showing maintained or improved work performance and better employee health, employees using fewer sick days, and fewer short-term leaves for stress and burnout. Established in 1914 the US federal government employees were given a standard 40-hour week. In 1926 Henry Ford established the 5-day work week for labourers which was a reduced week from the 6-days 60-72 hour work week which had been standardized as part of the WWI industrialization effort. Ford also established the 40-hour standard work week as he conducted studies which showed longer hours resulted in negligible increases in productivity when the work week was 44-hours or more. These became standard in North America in 1940. Computers, robotics and mechanization have since then resulted in an increase in productivity of between 180% to as high as 400% in most fields so many people and companies are acknowledging this increase and giving time back to their employees.
