Two weeks ago, we launched 5000 voices - an ambitious vox pop video project capturing the public’s views in the run-up to tomorrow’s general election. Our journalists have been talking to voters around the UK about the campaign trail’s hot topics and mishaps, what they think of the party leaders, and what really needs to be done in their areas. It’s a revealing collection of views - link in comments to read the stories from across our titles. And in this video, check out some of the answers we got when voters in Edinburgh, Dorking, Bury, Hull, Greater Manchester and other parts of the UK were asked: what’s more important, tax cuts or better investment in public services? #electioncoverage #localjournalism #journalism

Media bias is really difficult to prove. Okay, so this news story/article/debate was biased in X direction but another one was biased in Y direction. Together the media give voice to everybody over time, right? So what’s the big deal? Proving bias requires controlling all variables, which is impossible. Moreover, subtle bias is much more difficult to pinpoint than mere slanting. In this paper I dig into the archives and set out to do both in comparing two almost identical TV election debate openings, one of them with Helle Thorning-Schmidt as a debater running for office in Denmark https://lnkd.in/dtDuWWeB

Presidential debate (June 27, 2024) CNN will host the first general election presidential debate on June 27, 2024. President Joe Biden (D) and former President Donald Trump (R) were the only two candidates who qualified. The debate will be 90 minutes with two commercial breaks. Candidates' microphones will be muted until it is their turn to speak, and there will be no studio audience present for the debate. To qualify, a candidate had to meet certain constitutional, ballot access, and polling requirements. Click here to learn more about them. Biden and Trump agreed to participate in the CNN debate on May 15, 2024. This debate is not hosted by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). This is the first time the major party presidential candidates have both declined to participate in debates hosted by the CPD since the organization was founded in 1987. Date: June 27, 2024, at 9:00 p.m. ET Location: Atlanta, Georgia Venue: CNN studios Moderators: Jake Tapper and Dana Bash source : ballotpedia

So I’m stoked for the 2024 election. But not in the “Trump’s legal problems” kind of way, more in the “politics that impact our daily lives” kind of way. If you are the kind of person that always votes on state and local issues, but usually figures it out the week of, this is for you: In 2024 I’m going to get up to speed on NYC state and local politics and share my learnings. 🤓 To lay a foundation of why state and local politics are so important, I’ve written 2 short posts so far on what is a NY state legislator and where do they come from. Follow my Substack if you’re interested: https://lnkd.in/ezgmy5CY The next questions I’m digging into are: - who puts out voter guides and whose endorsement matters? - what are all these Democratic Party positions that we’re voting for in 2024? What other questions should I be exploring?

The Wyoming Senate started the 2024 budget session with a bang. In defiance of Senate President Ogden Driskill, the upper chamber voted 17-14 to reinstate Sen. Dave Kinskey as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, after he was stripped of the position last year, ousting Sen. Tara Nethercott. The position comes with considerable responsibility, particularly ahead of a budget session. Reporter Maggie Mullen breaks it down. You may have noticed some changes in the 2024 debates cycle and partnerships. Tom Collins, Executive Director of CCEC and Steve Goldstein, Arizona Journalist, sit down to discuss how people can watch the 2024 Live Debate Series this election season and how voters can access information on debates. With the election season already off to a start, not a crazy shocker that 2024 is predicted to be a record-setting year for political ad spending in the U.S.? News programming typically sees a boost during these election years (based off of Nielsen data from 2021-2023) but that increases the balancing act between keeping the tried-and-true local clients and that quick windfall of political spend. Here are some cool quick stats to see how political has been for broadcast and cable alike! https://bit.ly/3V6yBQ7

Your Voice Matters! As voting season is underway, I want to take a moment to highlight the importance of actively participating in the electoral process. Whether you're running for office or casting your vote, this is a critical opportunity to shape the future of our community, country, and beyond. Choosing the right party and candidates requires thoughtful consideration of their platforms, values, and track records. It's not just about the individual, but the principles they represent and the policies they aim to enact. Every vote counts, and your decision can make a meaningful impact on the direction of our society. Let's remember that democracy thrives when citizens are engaged and informed. I encourage everyone to research, discuss, and ultimately exercise their right to vote responsibly. Together, let's ensure that our voices are heard and our choices reflect the vision we have for a better tomorrow. #loksabhaelection #Election2024

For the first time since 1988, the Commission on Presidential Debates will not be sponsoring tomorrow night's conversation between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. I spoke with UT Tyler Public Administration Professor Wink Ken to discuss the move away from the Commission, his expectations for the debate, and whether it could impact local races.
