Chris Brook-Carter: “Half of retailers are now seeing a rise in absences due to mental health issues, with the high cost-of-living and a surge in abuse and retail crime contributing to deteriorating wellbeing across the sector. And we’re seeing this reflected in the calls coming through to the Retail Trust’s wellbeing helpline, the counselling sessions we’re delivering, and the more than £650,000 we gave out in financial aid in the last year alone. “But we remain inspired by the more than 200 employers we’re working with who are also taking tremendous efforts to improve wellbeing; by delivering more training, using data to better understand how their workforces are feeling and by empowering their people to protect their mental, physical and financial health. The predicament inherent in the financial alliances between prominent retailers and corporate entities with well-established organisations lies in the detriment they impose on local charities, which carry out essential grassroots work that often goes unnoticed. Take Tesco, for instance. This retail giant has aligned itself with eight prominent charities, each boasting an income ranging from £20 million to more than half a billion. Regrettably, these eight entities are the sole beneficiaries of public donations, leaving local small charities overlooked, their fate decided by Tesco within the confines of the boroughs housing their stores. Tesco, in its online statement, asserts that a 50p donation in Clubcard vouchers results in an equivalent donation to one of the aforementioned eight charities. Contemplate this: if, as a retailer, I had the agency to support my local charity, would it not be more reasonable than directing funds to an organisation with a surplus of £500 million, one that does not align with the needs I’ve discerned in my borough? Tesco, there exists room for improvement. Let me be unequivocal; these organisations undoubtedly contribute to society within their predefined objectives. However, my contention lies in their detachment from reality, paralleling the disconnect observed in politicians who assert that ‘homelessness is a choice.' Also, let this be known: Throughout London, smaller charities shoulder the societal burden, addressing immediate needs with scant financial backing from corporations and prominent retailers alike. My proposal is simple: reassess the allocation of your financial support. Redirect it to the small, local charities that genuinely impact the lives of people, rather than funneling hundreds of thousands of pounds to well established charities paying their CEOs such exuberant amount of money. Should you lack individuals capable of innovative thinking, individuals who can instigate meaningful changes within communities and cater to immediate needs, do not hesitate to reach out to me. I offer fresh ideas without demanding a pound of flesh. HOW MUCH? 💰💰💰 Over half a billion pounds that’s how much retailers have raised either directly or indirectly for good causes! On a day where the news is so often bad, it’s great to report something uplifting. We launched our first report into the charitable giving of retailers across the UK and it shows retailers and their customers raised a massive £540m for charity in 2022/23. This included £150m in direct donations from retailers, another £76m in goods and £200m in customer donations.    Retailers’ focus has always extended beyond the bottom line. So many businesses and the people who work within them, recognise the opportunity that the scale of the industry presents in having a wider impact on our society. And this report shows they are making a real difference right across the country.   The report also highlights the fantastic work of charities like Retail Trust in supporting those in retail and of Pennies in acting as a digital version of the traditional charity box, giving people the option to make small donations when paying by card or phone, in-store, or at an online checkout.
