I recently referred to Ray Kurzweil's TED Talk in April 2024 in one of my posts. There are so many amazing insights in it that I have to go into it again. I am often asked why I don't talk about anything other than AI in my presentations: The answer is so simple, because there are still so many aspects that we haven't thought through properly, because no one is preparing the general population for this huge change. Today I've picked out three amazing thoughts from Ray Kurzweil's TED Talk: AI is supercharging every aspect of our lives, from wealth creation to medical breakthroughs. Kurzweil predicts we'll see remarkable progress in medicine in the coming years, with AI accelerating drug discovery and treatment development. We're approaching a milestone called "longevity escape velocity" - a point where scientific progress extends our lifespans faster than we age. This could dramatically reshape our understanding of aging and mortality. By 2045, Kurzweil envisions a "singularity" where human intelligence merges with AI, potentially expanding our capabilities in ways we can barely imagine today. The AI Summit on Life Sciences helped make this an incredible week. Yesterday I met many wonderful people and learned a lot as leaders in pharmaceutical, biotech, public sector and academia came together to discuss: • The impact AI/ML is having today in the life sciences • Special considerations needed for melding science and technology together • How cross-sector and cross-discipline collaboration is required for the success of AI implementation and innovation • How to best prepare students and employees to excel in these rapidly shifting times   A few takeaways from the final panel discussion - "Realistic Applications of AI: So What? Now What?" with Luba Greenwood, J.D., Sridhar Iyengar, Milind Kamkolkar and Daniel Kjellsson:   🔹 There is an arms race for proprietary data. The outcome will greatly influence the ability of organizations that prioritize advancing life sciences to succeed and for the market to remain open to new entrants. 🔹 Within the new AI-driven ecosystem, learning about empathy, behavior science and psychology will be key. On the surface many problems look like they are technical or medical but in reality, are emotive. Understanding this is essential for the massive investment in building healthcare solutions to be adopted and have a strong ROI. 🔹 Pharmaceutical and technology companies do not view "risk vs. rewards" the same. Factors including politics, compliance/regulation, internal processes, time-to-market and the level of consequence if a product fails are in-grained into how people with different backgrounds will think and react. It is important for organizations from different industries to recognize these distinctions when they partner together to advance science with AI.     There were too many gems for a single post.
