When I first did defensive driving course, almost a decade ago, my first question was, if everyone is licensed driver then why only I need to be defensive. As I learnt it I understood its importance and necessity. WHAT IS DEFENSIVE DRIVING? Defensive driving is a set of skills and techniques that drivers use to minimize the risks associated with driving. The primary goal of defensive driving is to prevent accidents and avoid dangerous situations on the road, even if other drivers behave recklessly or make mistakes. Here are some key principles and strategies associated with defensive driving: 🚗 Stay Alert: Defensive drivers are always attentive to their surroundings. They keep their eyes on the road, avoid distractions (like texting or talking on the phone), and stay focused on the task of driving. 🚗 Maintain a Safe Following Distance: Defensive drivers maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them. This provides more time to react if the car in front suddenly stops or slows down. 🚗 Obey Traffic Rules: Defensive drivers follow all traffic laws, including speed limits, stop signs, and traffic signals. They also yield the right of way when required. 🚗 Anticipate and Predict: Defensive drivers constantly anticipate what other drivers might do. They watch for signs of erratic behavior from other vehicles and pedestrians. 🚗 Use Mirrors and Check Blind Spots: Regularly checking rearview and side mirrors, as well as blind spots, helps defensive drivers stay aware of their surroundings and potential dangers. 🚗 Avoid Aggressive Driving: Defensive drivers do not engage in aggressive behaviors such as tailgating, road rage, or weaving in and out of traffic. They remain calm and composed behind the wheel. 🚗 Adapt to Weather and Road Conditions: Defensive drivers adjust their driving to suit the weather (rain, snow, fog) and road conditions (wet, icy, or uneven surfaces). They reduce speed and increase following distances when necessary. 🚗 Maintain Vehicle in Good Condition: Keeping the vehicle properly maintained ensures that it responds well in emergencies. This includes maintaining brakes, tires, lights, and other essential components. 🚗 Scan for Potential Hazards: Defensive drivers constantly scan the road for potential hazards, such as pedestrians, cyclists, debris, or animals. They are prepared to react quickly. 🚗 Plan Escape Routes: Always have a plan in case something unexpected happens. Defensive drivers identify escape routes and safe areas to move to if a dangerous situation arises.
