This has been a journey that I never thought I was worthy of being on…everything I have been through personally and professionally was well worth it!!! To become a better academic, you have to push yourself to do new things, visit new places, and be open to new ideas. I grow the most through mentoring and collaboration - bc repeated interactions with an academic from a different tribe stretches you and makes you evolve. I cherish my students bc they make me take on new topics, challenge me to grow, and question my assumptions. I thrive most when I work with scholars from distant places - intellectually and physically - bc they show me there is a different way of living and thinking. When afforded a chance, open yourself to visiting new places, hearing new ideas and to being mentored by someone from a competing tradition. The Importance of Selection Over Effort In the process of applying to American universities, many parents rely on the rankings provided by US News or QS to guide their children's school choices. However, over time, fluctuations in these rankings have led to unexpected outcomes. Today marks the release of the 2025 QS World University Rankings, with #Purdue University now ranked 89th, the 8th ranked public university in the United States. Back in 2022, when I applied, it was outside the top 100. Conversely, some of my classmates applied early decision to Boston University (BU), which was then within the top 100, and shed tears of joy upon receiving their acceptance letters. This year, Boston University's QS ranking has fallen outside the top 100, while its annual cost of attendance, including tuition and living expenses, is more than double that of Purdue University. This decline in ranking, coupled with the exorbitant costs, casts doubt on the wisdom of their initial choice. Choosing wisely before things reveal their true value requires both luck and foresight. When you step into a luxury car going in the opposite direction, no matter how hard you try, it will get further and further away from your destination. Choosing to learn Servant Leadership may seem like entering a niche field, but I believe it will become popular around the world in a few years. 2009-“I really wished I could study in the USA”. 🪬 This was me in 2009- visiting the Harvard Business School and all I could think of was, why did I not do an overseas degree?? Well for one, it’s super expensive! And I was not ready to be 100% independent and I guess I was not at the right mindset at that time. I was not 100% convinced what an overseas education could yield me. Well, fast forward to today - I’m very happy to have been able to complete my SMU Masters in Wealth Management and done the overseas blocks in Yale School of Management University of St.Gallen and most recently, Wharton Executive Education! The overseas immersion programs were carefully constructed to give us a sample of how #wealthmanagement is viewed and practiced outside of #singapore. Areas that were of particular interest to me were #impactinvesting #esg #philanthropy and I relished in every moment of the overseas segments especially to interact with my classmates and the professors in these esteemed higher learning institutions. To anyone who is considering an choice to do a local university or a overseas one, do your sums, talk to friends and connections (especially your professors and mentors) and do a list of pros and cons! There’s never a perfect choice , only what was the most suitable and correct choice at that point in time. Go with your gut and believe in yourself ! There are always opportunities to do executive courses with the overseas universities or executive Centres once you are into your career. I am a huge advocate of being a #lifelonglearner and I applaud those who are always saying yes to more learning and development! 📕📗📘💻🖥️⌨️
