On this day December 28th, 1998, Ritesh Katariya and I came together and launched Chennaibazaar.com - one of the first Indian E-commerce businesses, from a small room in Egmore, Chennai. We started selling groceries, fruits, and vegetables on Chennaibazaar.com with Cash-On-Delivery model(probably the first) like what we enjoy today from Swiggy or bigbasket.com in Chennai. We failed as we were too early for E-commerce in 1998 with just dial-up internet connections. Later in early 1999, we pivoted by offering Railway Ticket Reservation services which was a big pain for travellers those days (long queues to book tickets at the booking counter). We planned to get into the Bus Ticketing service like redBus but then we were stopped by Indian Railways. Though we experienced initial success in our entrepreneurship journey, it was short-lived. We were students and doing this business part-time. We never thought of quitting and always wanted to focus on what problems we solved using the Internet as a medium. Our prayers were soon answered by one of our customers who was living in North America and requested us to deliver a flower bouquet to his family in India. This was our Eureka moment. Soon we pivoted Chennaibazaar.com as a gifting service provider for the Non-Resident Indians. We started making little money in the form of orders from customers for $5.99. This was another milestone in our journey. We increased the categories in our gifting services and launched #sarees(another first to our list) as a category for customers to gift to their mothers on Mother's Day and birthdays. We expanded our service pan India and in the year 2005, we changed Chennaibazaar to Cbazaar.com. Transformed us from a gifting service provider to an online apparel retailer. Till the year 2012, we were bootstrapped without any borrowings or external fundraising. Thanks to Samir Kumar and Pavan Krishnamurthy for giving us the first cheque. In 2014, Hemchandra Javeri joined our board as an investor and an industry expert mentor. Today we complete 25 years of our entrepreneurship journey. I want to thank all of my Cbazaar.com team members who have supported us and stood with us during the good times and bad times. Our listing at NSE this 25th year has added another cherry to our cake. This journey has been a big blessing in our lifetime. One of the most important people who advised us all through these 25 years is Murali Rajagopalachari. He is been my life coach and mentor and I believe that our Karma has got us introduced to Murali. My most important learning from Murali is when to say NO and what not to do. As entrepreneurs, many times we lost track of our focus and he pushed us to remain focussed. Thank you all. 🙏

I recall when I joined 99labels.com (another marketplace way ahead of its time), and when I had no experience of managing online business, we were asked by our CEO to check out Cbazaar.com and understand how they are managing online categories and international business! I think you are still ahead of time when it comes to managing international business for an Indian D2C! Congratulations Rajesh Nahar!!! It's truly inspiring!!!

Recently, I had the opportunity to have a 1:1 interaction with one of the founders of Meesho! Talking to Sanjeev made me realize that their journey was not easy; they faced multiple failures and challenges to make Meesho what it is today. For background, Sanjeev and Vidit are IITians.They left their corporate jobs with the motivation to build something of their own, which has a massive impact and to solve problems for the community. Back in 2015-16, they realised that a major part of commerce was happening offline, and that’s when they started a hyperlocal fashion marketplace, named 'Fashnear', which enabled users to shop online from the local shops near to them. Sanjeev told me about the multiple challenges they faced during their initial days: [1] There was a lack of variety for the customers, as they could only shop from nearby local shops. [2] Sellers wanted to reach a wider range of customers & not just in their locality and they also wanted to sell through their own website. [3] The business model was such that it was not possible to scale it much & it was also difficult to make money through it. In their next iteration, they started providing online storefronts to all sellers which they call Meesho 1.0. There were many homepreneurs like housewives in small cities & towns who wanted to sell to their own community. Meesho helped them with this. Though Meesho started as a social commerce company, onset of covid & emergence of affordable data like Jio helped users become more comfortable with online shopping. Hence in 2021, Meesho saw a huge spike in customers shopping directly from the platform which also gave its sellers access to a wide customer base. So how did Sanjeev & Vidit overcome these multiple challenges? [1] They kept talking to their users to understand their needs and took their feedback & kept working on it. [2] Sanjeev & Vidit spent their entire day in various shops & talked to the sellers & the customers to gain insights on the challenges faced. [3] Even when the ideas didn't work out well, they kept reiterating their ideas faster & adapted according to the users' needs. [4] They understood that solving problems takes time so they had to stick to it until the problem was solved. Perseverance was the key to their success. [5] Having the right & trusted co-founder alongside, was also crucial. Today more than 14 crore people shop on Meesho every year, and they are the only profitable Indian horizontal e-commerce platform. Meet the man who built India's largest online grocery chain at 62 years 1. Hari Menon was struggling at 37. He launched an e-commerce platform but made zero sales in the first year. Hari had to do something. He changed the model to online-offline retail and merged it with an online grocery chain, "Trinethra." 2. Soon, the charm worked. Fabmall expanded to 300 outlets in South India, and Aditya Birla Group acquired them. Hari saw the power of Online Grocery in 2000 when India was struggling with slow dial-up lines. But it all came crashing down. 👇 3. The dot com bubble burst in the US and took the Indian economy along with it. Funding dried up, and Hari's dream of starting another company shattered. But, the economy revived post-2007. The Internet came to India, and so did Hari's dream of starting an Online Grocery startup. In 2011, BigBasket was born. 🚀 4. The idea was simple ⏩ Partner with offline Kirana shops to build an online platform offering a wide range of products. Hari would wake up at 3:30 AM daily to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. The idea skyrocketed with 70% repeat customers and 25% monthly growth in Bangalore. 📉 5. BigBasket expanded to Hyderabad and Mumbai. Seeing the growth and first mover advantage, Fabmall Investors Chrys Capital and Ascent Capital invested 61 CR. BigBasket was doing 75,000 orders monthly but could not manage the demand. Hari realised it would be impossible to do without a warehouse. 6. So, he changed the model and expanded to Chennai, Pune and Delhi, with a warehouse in each city. The business was doing 150,000 orders monthly and had served a million orders. In 2014, BigBasket made revenues of 210 CR. It raised 220 CR from Helion Ventures and Zodius Capital. 💸 7. Bigbasket grew to 450,000 monthly orders and revenues of 600 CR. Hari decided to push the pedal on marketing now. Shah Rukh Khan got roped in as a brand ambassador with the tagline "Har Din Sasta". The campaign became massively successful, giving 5 million views to BigBasket. Hari followed it up brilliantly by launching BB Express - Doorstep delivery of groceries in 60 minutes and launching private labels. 🙌 8. The idea became a runaway hit, and BigBasket crossed 1000 CR revenue in 2017. In the same year, it raised a record 2000 CR from investors like Alibaba Group and PayTM Mall. Hari also acquired five milk companies and rebranded all to BB Daily. The online grocery and milk subscription happened by BigBasket in 2018. 💪 9. In 2019, BigBasket crossed 8000 CR in sales. During the lockdown, when Aadit Palicha & Kaivalya V. were stuck at home, they had a hard time getting groceries delivered to their home quickly. But they didn't just sit there complaining – instead they built something incredible. This is the story of Zepto and how it changed the Indian quick commerce market forever 👇 👉 Frustrated with online grocery delivery during lockdown Aadit & Kaivlaya launched Kirana Kart - an online grocery delivery platform. 👉 While running it they found some very useful customer data and insight, i.e. Customers whose delivery took anywhere between 45 mins to 1 hour had a 20% repeat order while those between 20 to 30 mins had over 44% repeat rate. 👉 After studying this pattern regularly they discovered a lot about Indian consumer behavior. 👉 Soon they shut down Kirana Kart and launched Zepto to start again with all the new things they had learned during the time of running Kirana Kart. 💡 Business strategies used by Zepto to take down their competition: ❓ The 3 W’s: ✅ WHAT do consumers want? Zepto comes up with its genius 10-minute delivery value proposition and shakes the entire ecosystem. 🏪 Dark Store Model A dark store is a storage warehouse that’s set up to serve customers within the surrounding vicinity of 2 to 3 km. Whenever Zepto wants to enter any new area they analyze and study three major things - 1️⃣ Buying Patterns 2️⃣ Purchasing Frequency 3️⃣ Spending power Then they do location engineering wherein they analyze - 1️⃣ Traffic routes in the area 2️⃣ Real estate prices 3️⃣ Average lead time for an order delivery After proper & careful evaluation of all these things, they open a dark store in a centralized location. 🎯 Hyperfocus While other players mostly compete on pricing they have a very tough time. Zepto on the other hand uses speedy and quick delivery as its MOAT to gain a competitive advantage. 👉 Started in just 2021 Zepto today has 220+ dark stores and operates in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore, etc ⏩ Fast forward to today Aadit & Kaivalya are the youngest unicorn startup founders, at 20 years. Truly showcasing that age is just a number. Recently Zepto raised $200 million at a $1.4 billion valuation to become the first Indian Unicorn 🦄 of 2023. Moving to a new city can be overwhelming, especially when you need to set up an entire household from scratch. Last week, I experienced this firsthand as I helped one of my close friends set up her new home in Delhi. Naturally, this involved a lot of online shopping – ordering furniture, appliances, and countless little essentials. I ordered and returned various household items and decor pieces online from a few different apps. We explored multiple apps, but Meesho quickly became our go-to destination for its wide range of products and affordable prices. And since I hadn't shopped on the app before, I made sure to read customer feedback and check for products with real user photos alongside the seller's images. This helped ensure the items actually looked like what we were expecting to receive. Which they obviously did! But I was particularly surprised by their lightning-fast refund process. On Sunday, as I was about to place a new order, I noticed that my wallet balance had been updated to reflect the funds from a return I had made the previous day. It was one of those rare times when I experienced a refund being processed within just 20-25 mins. As someone who devours financial news, their recent success story caught my eye in an article some time back. In July 2023, they created history by becoming the first and only profitable horizontal e-commerce platform in India. It seems like that their strategic focus on tier 2/3 cities with a 0% commission model has really paid off. Beyond the efficient refund system, Meesho was our very own – in helping us furnish my friend's new apartment. Their wide variety and focus on affordability made the whole process smooth and allowed us to find everything we needed within budget. Navigating the bustling bazaars of online shopping can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. On YouTube, I’ve observed a spirited debate unfurling around two popular e-commerce contenders: Meesho and Myntra. Meesho, a reseller platform, has carved a niche for itself by empowering individuals to start their own businesses, while Myntra, a fashion giant, continues to dazzle with its array of branded offerings. Recently my dad sent me a product link on Meesho to place an order for him, a very parent thing to do btw! So I went on the platform and looking at the prices, couldn’t resist purchasing something for myself. That's when I became curious about the brand and wanted to learn how they figured out the secret to e-commerce success. Meesho started as a platform for fashion and now is the only profitable large-scale horizontal e-commerce company in India. How did they do it? - By hitting that spot between affordability, accessibility and reliability. Their journey is a great lesson on how you don't need to have a billion-dollar budget to succeed in e-commerce. It's all about creating value for the customer - affordable prices, quality products, and easy accessibility. They have successfully entered a market that traditional e-commerce players have ignored, with over 50% of sales coming from Tier 2 and below cities, making them well-known. They started with fashion, but soon sellers started listing all kinds of products on the platform - including categories that they hadn't seen on other apps. They shifted their focus, adapted to the market and have now become a household name in India. The takeaway from them for any brand is to: ✔️ Create value for the customer ✔️ Be adaptable and unafraid to pivot ✔️ Focus on affordability, accessibility, and reliability ✔️ Positive social impact can come from the right kind of commerce. So recently, when I was doing my expenses analysis. I saw a huge jump in my groceries cost. I was regularly buying groceries from zepto and swiggy instamart and then I did shopping at local shops, what did I notice? 1. In comparison with local groceries shop, prices are almost 30-40% higher on these apps even for items that are for daily use like vegetables. 2. The quality of their products will always be under scanner because you will not see how is it when you buy compare to local shops 3. You will be charge platform fees, handling charge, delivery charge, convenience charge, and if you are buying on odd time then you might have to give surge fee which constitutes around 20-40% of overall price just for you being inactive or being lazy not to go to market. While it is easy and convenient to buy on these apps but giving almost 60-70% higher price just for convenience doesn’t justify the cost where you can always go to market within 1 km range and get the groceries in a cheaper price. Now the question arises, Can these app become successful in non-metro cities, towns and villages? Is this business sustainable enough in long term because the customers are most selfish and they will go wherever they find the cheapest prices. You doesn’t create a brand loyalty here in this business that will help customers to stick to one platform. Building for Bharat doesn’t only means build for high net individuals which resides in metro cities and get first time freedom of ( >8 LPA income) The research says purely online or offline player cannot stand in indian market in customers point of view and they have to go to omnichannel way to cater both the online and offline segments customers. The day any Indian startup can figure out how to build a business and startup out of India will be historical progress for India in long run? Only time will tell if it is achievable or not. Just two years ago, the idea of quick commerce or instant deliveries was often dismissed with laughter. Some even argued that consumers had no need for products to arrive in 10-15 minutes. Today, quick commerce is rapidly gaining traction among many millennial and Gen Z households. Companies have extended their services beyond groceries, now delivering items ranging from fans and T-shirts to jewellery and iPhones. In a recent report, Goldman Sachs highlighted that Blinkit's implied valuation, estimated at $13 billion, has surpassed that of parent company Zomato's core food delivery business, underscoring the swift expansion of this sector.
