Since this was in my feed it made me think about the misattribution of importance in understanding the tech stack for product management hiring. There’s too much false equivalence between what’s in the tech stack and what a product manager needs to know about those tools in order to succeed in the role. In interviews I recommend asking “do you have experience building products that were supported on this infrastructure?” Rather than “do you have experience in X?” I have been asked on several occasions if I had “experience in X” that’s often never touched by product. Is Azure/AWS/Kubernetes/etc important? Absolutely, but when you ask a PM if they have experience in that it sounds like you’re asking “do you have experience delivering features on this product?” I used to say no, but now it’s a yes as the reality behind why that question is being asked starts to solidify. Most PMs have never worked for Amazon, so the answer would seem obvious even if they’ve worked on products powered by AWS. “No I’ve never worked on AWS”…. Typically (with exceptions as always) PMs generally do not need to know the inner workings of infrastructure products in order to do their job effectively, that’s where a good relationship with engineering comes in handy. The real reason questions are asked about the tech stack is that product strategy can often be impacted by the way those products behave in the SDLC. If you don’t understand the concepts behind containerization or the way APIs are deployed in an AWS environment it might lead to some strategic mishaps. Food for thought, the way questions around specific technologies are asked can have profound impacts on how your candidates interprets it.
