Is it OK to take news stories and feed them to AI bots? Tech companies say it is — and journalists are worried

CNN JUST BLOCKED CHATGPT With all the controversy around AI and journalism, the saga continues. Recently, the Associated Press (the news agency virtually all journalists subscribe to for info on breaking news) instructed its staff not to use AI-generated content for publication. And now, CNN, Disney, The New York Times, Reuters, Bloomberg, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Insider, ABC News, Conde Nast, Hearst, Vox Media, and dozens of other major media companies have blocked access to ChatGPT’s bot so that it can’t crawl its archives. Basically, for the time being, they’re not allowing GPTBot access to their archived content, which ChatGPT uses to learn from. It’s unfortunate since any AI platform is only as good as the materials it learns from… And if all it can rely on besides books is random blogs and social media content, we’ll all miss out on the benefits of fact-checking that traditional media outlets are tasked with. But why the sudden uproar? Are large media companies scared of technology? Or is this about corporate greed? I remember when the GDPR standard came into effect in 2018, instead of complying with the new rules (which they had two years to prepare for), over a thousand US news sites simply blocked access to their content in Europe. Who is losing here? Certainly, the readers and viewers who’d like to stay informed… But also the publications that rely on advertising money to stay in business. Fewer visitors mean fewer clicks, which in turn means a decline in revenue. And feeling the impact on the bottom line when you block 27 countries all at once - you’d think media companies would have learned a lesson with the arrival of GDPR. But here we are again. ChatGPT launches, and suddenly media giants that, by and large, allow “free” access to the public to consume their archived content now they want OpenAI (the company that owns ChatGPT) to pay for licensing what’s literally old news. My take on this is you can resist change, but you won’t be able to block the advent of emerging technologies. Lawsuits and behind-the-scenes negotiations only can do so much. The age of AI is here. We can’t put the genie back in the bottle. The world evolves, and those who are unwilling to accept it get left behind. How do you think this will play out? #media #mediarelations #pr #publicrelations #entrepreneurship #ai #chatgpt

In response to a lawsuit from The New York Times, Microsoft has entered a partnership with AI startup Semafor, a news and media startup. The collaboration aims to utilize AI to assist journalists rather than replace them. Semafor Signal is expected to support journalists by leveraging AI tools for searching news sources across multiple languages and geographies, facilitating the delivery of diverse perspectives to readers. This development is unfolding amid an ongoing legal dispute involving Microsoft, The New York Times, and OpenAI, with allegations regarding the unauthorized training of OpenAI's ChatGPT on millions of New York Times articles. It's good to see some bipartisan discussion on this issue. "Senators who have raised bipartisan outcry over the demise of newsrooms at the hands of Big Tech companies are rallying to protect journalism from the potentially fatal blow of artificial intelligence. They’re hoping to ensure that news organizations receive full compensation when algorithms are trained using news articles — and are urging colleagues to act before the twilight of human-generated news sets in." But I've heard this chatter for over a year now. It's time for action. #AI #AIJournalism #JournalismMatters #RollCall #News #Journalism #ResponsibleAI #GenerativeAI #ChatGPT

ChatGPT parent OpenAI has struck a deal with Axel Springer, parent to a slew of German and U.S. media outlets, to “help provide people with new ways to access quality, real-time news content through our AI tools,” OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap announced Wednesday. Why it matters: The deal marks a new milestone in the relationship between journalism companies and artificial intelligence firms — one that involves not just providing data to train ChatGPT’s models, but also using vetted journalism to bolster the accuracy of ChatGPT’s responses. Be smart: The deal also marks the first time OpenAI has detailed plans for ChatGPT to provide attribution to news publishers in its responses. In a statement, the two firms said the new arrangement "explicitly values the publisher's role in contributing to OpenAI's products" and marks a “significant step” in both firms‘ commitment to “creating new financial opportunities that support a sustainable future for journalism." https://lnkd.in/eSm3uM_R

What is the future of journalism when AI tools like ChatGPT can generate reams of copy in seconds? Although AI has its uses, it isn't intelligent, and can't replace the intuition, tone and skill offered by professional wordsmiths. Read this insightful piece by FirstWord's founder Adrian Michaels which is based on six months of research into exactly what AI can do right now, and where its limits lie. In the midst of the global AI excitement, some companies are taking a cautious approach. CNN, The New York Times, and reportedly Disney, ESPN and a few others have recently blocked GPTBot’s access to their platforms, thus restricting future training of Chat GPT with reliable news content. Whilst the need for a compensation model for news entities and writers is evident, what caught my attention in this article is the potential negative effect that restricting AI’s access to verifiable content may have for the quality of future LLM models. If AI is to become a part of our day-to-day life, it’s crucial that it’s trained on unbiased, verifiable data for its integrity and our safety. https://lnkd.in/eKT4qxY5
