"Across 32 different countries, there was a 3.8-fold uptick in MR imaging for cardiac concerns between 2011 and 2022, experts detailed in European Radiology [1]. Same for CT of the heart, which saw a 4.5-fold increase during the same time span. Reporting of such CT and MRI examinations was handled primarily by radiologists (at 71% and 76%, respectively) or in consensus with nonradiologists (19% and 27%). CTS Retina, what an incredible conference, that brought together leaders in industry, financial investment, and clinical research. Probably the most I have learned at a conference in a single day ever! I must congratulate founder Dr. Arshad M. Khanani, and his co-chairs, Dr. Jeff Heier and Dr. Peter Kaiser, for such a thoughtful and engaging agenda.  Some of the key things I learned: 1. There is 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆, an advanced form of macular degeneration that impacts millions around the world, can potentially see benefits in functional outcomes. This requires novel approaches towards assessing visual function. 2. The adherence of patients with diabetic complications remains a challenge and multiple 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 that under investigation provide a potential solution. 3. Dr Jeff Heier, presented results from a prospective home study, showing impact on patient management. Dr. Heier also received the 1st Prof. Ramin Tadayoni “Summit of Excellence” Award! 4. The importance of independent real world studies. Dr. David Eichenbaum presented the first ever real world study on real world outcomes using Aflibercept 8-mg and Dr. David RP Almeida MD MBA PhD presented, promising real world outcomes of Faricimab. #innovation #clinicaltrials

Coverage in Radiology Business of the CMS proposal to extend virtual direct supervision of diagnostic tests with contrast an additional year, until December 31, 2025. In the the preamble to the proposed rule, CMS appears to recognize the need for virtual supervision of Level 2 diagnostic tests, but they still have patient safety and quality of care concerns. This is unfortunate since the mechanisms I’ve seen in place for physician offices and imaging centers directly supervising contrast studies via audio and video communications technology actually have improved patient safety and quality.
