Our new paper just got published! We (with Ian Marder) share our findings from the design, facilitation and study of a dialogue project with young Black adults and members of the Gardaí in a local area in West Dublin. In this context, we discuss the potential of bringing dialogue and restorative practices together by reflecting critically on kinds of understanding that could and could not be gained. See below if you want to learn more, or feel free to get in touch with Ian or me!
Very happy to share this new article: 'Can dialogue help police officers and young Black adults understand each other? Key findings from a restorative process' - please let me know if you would like a copy sent over. We (with Katharina Kurz) used restorative practices and worked with Gardaí (An Garda Síochána) and young Black adults in Blanchardstown, Dublin, to organise, facilitate and study a dialogue process. We had the support of many others: Foróige, The Childhood Development Initiative, Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI), Fingal County Council, Irish Research Council and Black and Irish, among others. https://lnkd.in/ez53YwSR

I HAVE A NEWS FLASH FOR ALL SO-CALLED BLACK PEOPLE We can't rely on bigoted racist white people to fix problems they created like housing and banking discrimination as a example. If those racist bias are going to be done away with, it will be up to us to do it! PERIOD The only way we can do away with bigotry in banking and housing as a example is by empowering ourselves. Let's be blunt. The only thing that racist understand is the dollar. We must stop buying stuff we do not need. We must stop participating in the sham voting process. We must stop letting racists get rich off of our labor in prisons by staying out of them. We must start our own businesses and use our talents for us. When we do this, it will be a start for us in empowering ourselves. Peace

“Like Me” bias is prevalent and likely highly correlated with privilege. You can no longer afford to avoid increasing your social and emotional IQ. It’s imperative if you want to succeed in modern society. Here is how to get started: • Surround yourself with trusted colleagues of different cultural backgrounds. • Get their feedback about your ideas, products, services, etc. They will serve as a mirror to keep your biases in check. • Ask yourself which audiences the pitch for your product or service may be missing. Will it appeal to people of different cultural groups? • How can you package your message so that it is inclusive? • When you fall short of being inclusive, learn from the experience, come up with a more inclusive message and try again. • If you suffer a loss in audience confidence in what you are delivering, recover by publicly admitting your failure, make amends by developing more inclusive actions and model Inclusion for others. Rather than attacking those who call you out for your shortcomings, view their message as a gift - fuel for being a better salesperson.
“He also defended excluding Black artists like Stevie Wonder. "I suppose when you use a word as broad as 'masters,' the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level." #rockandroll #halloffame #jannwenner #blackartists #bias #stereotypes https://lnkd.in/g_b7axPf
