Long, long ago, in a distant forest, there lived a group of wise and courageous elephants. These elephants followed the laws of nature, diligently plucking fruits from the trees each day to sustain themselves. However, in this forest, the number of fruits gradually dwindled, and the elephants found themselves facing a severe shortage of food. One day, an elder and sage-like elephant, named Precision Pachyderm, began contemplating the challenges of survival. He reflected on the principles of evolution in the natural world and drew inspiration from Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. He realized that adaptation to a new environment was the key to survival. So, Precision Pachyderm started encouraging other elephants to explore new methods of sustenance, no longer relying solely on the fruits from the trees. They began learning how to plant, harvest, and preserve food. This required the elephants to learn how to stand on their hind legs and use their front limbs for various tasks. Initially, it was a challenging process, and the elephants stumbled and faltered, but they never gave up. Every day, they persevered, learning and improving. Years passed, and the elephants gradually mastered these new skills. They established their own farms and cultivated a variety of delicious foods. Their lives became more comfortable, and hunger and insecurity became things of the past. Throughout this journey, the elephants displayed unwavering determination and relentless perseverance. They were willing to embrace challenges, acquire new skills, and adapt to a new reality. It was this spirit that led them to success, achieving a remarkable transformation from fruit plucking to standing on two legs. Just as the elephants' dedicated efforts ultimately led to a bountiful harvest, so did the relentless efforts of Precision Pachyderm and his fellow elephants lead to the success of Precision Corporation. June is Dairy Month! People are usually surprised when they learn I live on a real working dairy farm. Dairy Month gives me a special opportunity to share some of the lessons I picked up on the farm and applied to my career. 1. Have a routine. Be prepared to scrap it. Cows are creatures of habit, but nothing else on the dairy farm is quite so reliable! 2. Accountability isn’t a buzzword. It’s a lifestyle. When hundreds of lives depend on you daily, there’s no room for ambiguity on this one. 3. Stay humble. Remember what you can control and what you can’t. Farmers never have the illusion that they’re in control. The weather will change tomorrow. 4. Hold on to your sense of wonder and your learning mindset. From the marvel of witnessing a healthy calving to the lessons cows can teach about diversity, inclusion, and belonging, there’s a constant source of opportunity available. 5. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Clean kitchen? Small stuff. Not small stuff? The preemie born on the coldest day of the winter spending its first few hours next to the furnace vent…in the kitchen. 6. Find what you’re good at and make your best contribution. I’ve never been much help at the actual farming, but I could provide the stability of a steady paycheck and benefits by doing something I loved and excelled at. # 6 is the biggest lesson of all. WHAT’S NEXT? Last year I took the (scary) decision to back myself. I left the role I’d held for many years, and have spent the past 6 months re-calibrating. This has been an invaluable time of rest, reflection, connection and re-connection, research, and some deep introspection. I’m arriving at a place now where my priorities are clear (and in many ways different), my passions re-ignited, and I know what I want and need to do. My advice to anyone considering a similar move is – take a deep breath, and do it! Recently an article and post came up in my LinkedIn feed that not only resonated deeply, but also crystallised my approach to what I know my immediate next step must be (with thanks to @Will McTighe and @Jun Han Chin). It’s no surprise that our planet is in serious trouble. It’s also not ‘news’ that the root cause of the problems, and many of the solutions, lie with us. One such solution – acknowledged by many as being one of the most impactful changes each one of us can make – lies in the food we eat. Alternative proteins are one of the most powerful tools in our arsenal to address climate change, food security and human (and animal) health. And that’s my Ikigai. Thanks to the incredible work by field building organizations like New Harvest, the foundational science of cultivated foods has advanced incredibly fast. 💸 $350,000 was the price of the first cultivated hamburger made by Mark Post in 2013. Only a 'mere' 10 years later, prices have dropped to 10% of that, with some companies achieving 1% (IFYKYK). 🥩 This is where to put dollars if you want to have the most impact on cultivated meat becoming a reality. What would you do if you couldn't (or didn't have to) do what you do now? Inspired by recent chats with friends (from risk-land) who are now well into remarkably different careers (e.g., coconut yoghurt and artisanal soap businesses), I've been thinking about this. So many things I enjoy. Then, when passion is overlayed with (current) ability, the list gets much shorter 😅. Growing stuff and building stuff with or for things I've grown, then cooking, brewing, and pickling the grown stuff - that's what I look forward to. Aged 18, I went through a gruelling careers advisory process. The top two recommendations: 1. Military 2. Forestry My first instinct when we got this place was to start re-foresting. It's not been an easy year one, with erratic seasons. But one-quarter of the plot is now teaming with saplings. Then I remembered I had a family to feed and built these raised beds (and a bunch more from repurposed and waste wood in a polytunnel). I now look at "forest for sale" signs enviously as we drive to No. 2's school. Maybe this stays a passion/hobby, maybe not. But our other passions teach us so much. In my case, planning, preparation, intentional observation, adapting to external conditions, and experimentation. The greatest success on the latter front - getting yuzu, lemongrass, lime, curry leaf, Japanese bitter orange (karatachi, カラタチ), almond, apricot, Sichuan pepper, and ginger growing (well) in the UK.
