For a book to speak to you, it must find you at the right time. This year, I read Peaks and Valleys by Spencer Johnson.  - It is a short book.  - It took him 20 years to write it.  - It got under my skin. It is a simple parable that reminds us about the ebbs and flows of life and business. It won’t take long to read. But not all great books are long reads. It asked me some tough questions. Was I a little complacent when things were going well? Hmmm. It serves as a timely reminder that the wise things we do in the valleys help us get back up to the peak. But. Valleys are needed. They are a chance to rest, refresh and rethink. The path out of the valley appears when you choose to see things differently. It is also a reminder to keep doing the things that got you to the peak. The Book Of Eli Prequel Series: Confirmation, Cast & Everything We Know

A full year of books! It turns out that "what I read through the year" is a neat perspective on the passing time; keeping a journal was a pretty good idea. It was definitely the Year of Doctorow, fiction and non-fiction alike. He is an absolutely master of compelling stories that help me question base assumptions without being an a**hole about it. From the current crop I'd go with The Lost Cause, because it gave me a few new ways to think about the inevitable chaos coming with the 2024 elections. The story of WWII spy Virginia Hall (A Woman of No Importance) has stuck with me all year. A level of courage and dedication that cannot help but inspire us to try and do better. And a page-turning spy thriller at the same time. What's not to love? I got lucky with my sci-fi picks as well --- A Closed and Common Orbit had some compelling ideas about our emerging age of AI, and Pastwatch looked at Columbus in a modern way (again, without being an a**hole about it). And of course I got to follow Rinker Buck float his flatboat down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers ... so awesome. My first book of 2024 will be another like this, but written in the late 1940s by the couple that actually inspired Buck. More notes and links to all of these are on my book list.
