Congratulations to AstraZeneca on the expansion of Healthy Heart Africa! It’s incredibly impressive that this initiative has screened more than 50 million people for hypertension and trained more than 11,000 healthcare workers over the past 10 years – and will now be taking on chronic kidney disease. As Dr. Aceng, Uganda’s Minister of Health stated when discussing the rise of non-communicable diseases in Africa: “Prevention, prevention, prevention is the way to go to make sure our populations stay alive and thrive.” We were pleased to attend this session during the World Health Assembly co-hosted by AZ and the Uganda Ministry of Health which featured panelists from the Renal Patients Society of Kenya, WHO, Amref Health Africa, PATH, and AZ and keynote addresses from the Ministers of Health of Egypt and Uganda. AstraZeneca's Healthy Heart Africa (HHA) programme is tackling the burden of cardiovascular disease in Africa, through screening for hypertension at the primary healthcare level. The strong commitment of respective partner governments and healthcare agencies to tackling the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in their countries is paramount to the programme’s success. Across the globe, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) cast a long shadow over the lives of individuals and communities. Whether it's high blood pressure, diabetes management, a cancer diagnosis, or ongoing cancer treatment, NCDs touch us all in one way or another. Central to the success of tackling NCDs is the strengthening of healthcare systems to improve treatment for those living with these conditions. The urgency of the situation is addressed in the IFPMA report, ‘Action on NCDs: How the innovative pharmaceutical industry helps bridge the care gap’. It features AstraZeneca’s Healthy Heart Africa programme as a best practice case study, and outlines key strategies to bridge the care gap: Innovation, Availability, Empowerment, and Capacity Building. By addressing these pillars, we are helping to deliver better, more equitable health outcomes for societies right across the globe. 📢 Latest findings from our large-scale study on the impact of COVID-19 on tuberculosis control in Indonesia has been published by The Lancet Global Health Indonesia, with high burdens of both TB and COVID-19, has experienced devastating consequences on TB control during the pandemic. The study reveals that TB case notification rates dropped by 26% and treatment coverage declined by 11%. Districts with high COVID-19 incidence and limited healthcare resources were most affected. This research emphasises the need for resilient health systems and increased access to quality healthcare services. By understanding the collateral damage caused by COVID-19, we can make targeted investments in improving healthcare infrastructure and services across the country. Let's work together to control TB and learn from the lessons of COVID-19. AMREF and GSK are set to co-host a side event at #wha77 to address the urgent global health crisis posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly acute in low—and middle-income countries. With Africa projected to bear the highest burden of AMR-related deaths by 2050, coordinated strategies and collective action are critical. The session will spotlight insights and gather inputs to bolster AMR action across Africa. As part of the "African Leadership for AMR Action" initiative, a 13-month endeavour, we aim to strengthen locally led AMR programs informed by a region-wide landscape analysis. Discussions will focus on priority strategic information and the design of a messaging framework, culminating in the formation of a regional action group. By convening high-level stakeholders from government, civil society, and the private sector, we aim to align on key priorities and mobilize support for AMR response. The Joint Action JARDIN, launched on March 8, 2024, aims to integrate European Reference Networks (ERNs) into national health systems. The expected results from JARDIN, including recommendations, blueprints and reports from concrete pilot implementations are to stimulate the elaboration of improved national plans for rare diseases in EU Member States. The European Reference Networks (ERNs) are virtual networks involving healthcare providers across Europe. They aim to facilitate discussion on complex or rare diseases and conditions that require highly specialised treatment, and concentrated knowledge and resources. 24 ERNs are working on a range of thematic issues, including ERN-LUNG - European Reference Network for rare respiratory diseases, the European Reference Center for Rare Lung Diseases, which includes a core network on #pulmonaryhypertension. Today, the Joint Action on cancer and other NCD prevention project (JA Prevent NCD) kicks off in Oslo - a significant step in combating cancer and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). 😷 NCDs represent a significant portion of the disease burden in Europe, much of which is preventable.🏥 Despite known risk factors like unhealthy diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity, the societal and economic costs continue to escalate. 🌬 The project unites a diverse consortium of European countries in the collective fight against cancer and non-communicable diseases. Led by Norway and supported by over 100 partners, #JAPreventNCD aims to tackle NCDs and their risk factors at both individual and societal levels. The project aims to build a comprehensive European infrastructure for monitoring factors related to cancer and other NCDs. 📈 Funded by the European Union under the #EU4Health programme, the project has a substantial budget of 95.5 million euros, and represents 20% of the EU's total health budget. This initiative fosters collaboration among 25 nations to address the growing NCD burden across borders. The project also aligns with the objectives of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the 'Healthier Together – EU NCD Initiative'. The #EEAagreement gives Norway the opportunity to participate in the EU4Health and other EU programmes on an equal footing with the EU Member States. Even with Europe's diversity, we are all dealing with similar challenges, especially with changes in our population and big events like the COVID-19 pandemic.🌍 The pandemic emphasized the necessity of cross-border cooperation in health crises. While slower in progression, #NCDs represent significant health crises demanding coordinated action. Since the year 2000 about 75 million lives have been saved as a result of the collaborative global efforts to end #Tuberculosis (TB). The global health community is hopeful that if commitments are converted into tangible actions, we can jointly achieve the health target of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ending the TB epidemic by 2030. In this direction, Siemens Healthineers has made a stronger commitment to #endTB. Through our recent partnership with The Global Fund we will accelerate diagnosis of TB in Indonesia by increasing the adoption of AI-based screening using chest X-rays. https://lnkd.in/gmZ_BJvS Additionally we will work with the Ministry of Health of Uganda to actively find missing patients by expanding AI-based TB screening across the country. The World Health Organization has reported that despite being a preventable and curable disease, 1.3 million people died from TB in 2022 – making it the world’s top infectious killer. World TB Day is observed to raise awareness about TB and catalyze action to address its devastating health, social, and economic impact around the world. It is time we join forces to ensure universal and equitable access to TB care by increased investments, adoption of innovations, accelerated action and multi-sectoral collaboration. Yes! We can end TB! #EndTB
