Midwifery is paramount to solving the maternal health crisis. But in order to leverage the individualized care and positive outcomes that midwives create, it’s first necessary to build a sustainable work environment for midwives. Support on both a local and legislative level, equitable pay, and recognition for their work are all key ingredients to helping the midwifery workforce to grow and thrive. Clinically Integrated Networks are a model of collaboration that midwives can use to achieve all these things. The network model allows them to maintain their independence as providers while using their collective power to negotiate rates with payers, among other things. If you've been following us, you know we're building the first Clinically Integrated Network for Independent Midwives in the nation(!) In this webinar, we'll will share more about how the Clinically Integrated Network model works and how we’ve started to implement it. We'll cover why a Clinically Integrated Network is a good model for independent midwives, how it can improve the experience for both midwives and birthing people, and how a network can help bolster the national support for and recognition of midwives to achieve even greater outcomes. You can register for this free webinar via this link: https://lnkd.in/gaaDJqAg Can't make it? No worries! This webinar will be recorded for your convenience.

White Ribbon Alliance Kenya understands that healthcare providers and midwives play a crucial role in improving #maternal and newborn health. We believe they are on the front lines, working tirelessly to ensure mothers and babies receive the care they need. However, they often face significant challenges in providing #quality care, including inadequate training, lack of resources, and unfriendly work environments. That is why we #advocate not just for better healthcare policies, but also for creating a supportive working environment for healthcare providers and #midwives. By doing so, we improve their job satisfaction, reduce burnout, and ultimately improve the quality of care midwives provide to mothers and newborns. We believe we can never achieve this change without conducting evidence-based advocacy. By using data and research, we inform policymakers of the importance of investing in a friendly working #environment for healthcare providers and midwives. This includes policies that promote safe and supportive working conditions, fair compensation, and opportunities for professional #development.Investing in a friendly working environment for healthcare providers and midwives ultimately benefits not just them but also mothers and newborns. It improves the quality of care they receive, helps us reduce maternal and newborn deaths, and promotes healthier families and communities. Increasing Access to Midwives for All Birthing People for Empowering and Sustainable Birthing Choices 💪🌱 So honoured to have Holly Smith, CNM, MPH, FACNM , Jyesha Wren, Nurse Midwife and Kimberly Durdin at the Future of Maternal Care Summit speaking on an often underappreciated topic - midwives. Key takeaways were: 🤝The maternal care industry may be seen as becoming high tech low touch however midwifery care importantly provides the opposite. 💲Midwife reimbursement - as midwives often give enhanced and holistic care management and education, this is a key reason why midwives are asking for advanced reimbursement rates. 🌍 Looking to other countries who have better maternal care outcomes, increased usage of midwives often explains this trend 🧠 Midwifery led care truly centers the birthing person , checking in on their well-being foremostly and taking the time to understand the holistic health of the birthing person #midwifery #maternalcare #fomc2024

The Role of Midwives in Maternal Healthcare Midwives play a crucial role in providing personalized and holistic care to pregnant women. They offer essential support and services, including prenatal care, labor and delivery assistance, and postpartum care. Research has shown that midwifery-led care can improve maternal and neonatal outcomes, reduce the need for medical interventions, and enhance the birthing experience. Policies that support midwifery education and integration into the healthcare system can improve maternal health outcomes and provide more options for expectant mothers. It is important to recognize and support the invaluable contributions of midwives to maternal healthcare. #Midwifery #MaternalCare #HealthcarePolicy #policies

Contrary to a popular myth, midwives are qualified healthcare professionals! Based on the country of operation, midwives typically undertake a professional degree, post their nursing degree or undertake a longer direct midwifery course. Midwives undergo rigorous training and education specific to pregnancy, childbirth and women's health. While their scope of practice differs from that of doctors, they are trained to manage low-risk pregnancies, provide prenatal care, assist with labour and delivery, and offer postpartum support. Midwives also collaborate with doctors and other healthcare providers when necessary to ensure the best possible outcomes for mothers and babies. Both midwives and doctors play critical roles in maternity care, and their qualifications complement each other to provide holistic and personalised care to women throughout their childbirth journey. ACNM has created a resource center for our members to utilize to help discussions with their respective State Medicaid Agencies around the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) impending Transforming Maternal Health Model (TMaH) funding opportunity. Our resource center includes suggested materials that demonstrate the value and contributions of advanced practice midwives in improving public health and maternal health care and the policy levers that can address barriers to midwives and midwifery-led care in the United States. The resource center also includes member-access to our updated “State Fact Sheets” with key information about midwives and midwifery in the states. Please note that these fact sheets are still being vetted by ACNM state leaders for accuracy. Members can access the resource center here: https://lnkd.in/eUx4BW4R Better integration of midwives and midwifery-led care models are integral to improving our country’s alarming maternal mortality and morbidity outcomes. Midwifery voices should be present in all policy discussions at the federal, state, and local level that seek to achieve the “Triple Aim” of improved care, reduced cost, and patient satisfaction. As such, ACNM is encouraging Affiliate Leaders from all states to engage with their SMAs about the TMaH funding opportunity and the benefits of including midwives, birth centers, and midwifery-led care models in their TMaH proposals. CMS has signaled that it intends to release the TMaH notice of funding opportunity this Spring 2024 with applications due to CMS in Summer 2024.

If you are pregnant and interested in midwifery care you can utilize our 'Request for Care Form' on our website. By submitting a request, you will join a wait pool that is not a ‘top-of-the-list, first-in list.’ The wait pool is unranked and reviewed frequently by your preferred midwifery practices. If and when a spot becomes available, you will be contacted directly and offered care. Due to the high number of care requests received each month, you will not be contacted unless there is a space available for you. Completing a request for care does not guarantee you a space with a midwifery practice. If you have not been contacted by a midwifery practice by 10-12 weeks gestation, please arrange appropriate prenatal care through another primary care provider. Even if there are no midwives practicing in your area, we encourage all pregnant people in Alberta who would like midwifery care to apply, as this helps demonstrate the need for midwifery services in your community and supports future workforce planning. Eligibility for publicly funded midwifery services is open to anyone with an Alberta Personal Health Care Number, an RCMP Health Care Number, or a Canadian Military Health Care Number. Your path to receiving personalised pregnancy support begins with us! Find out more and submit a care form here. https://buff.ly/3weNGVJ #MidwiferyCare #AAMMidwives #PregnancyJourney

Consider attending #maternitycareatthecrossroads conference Sept 19/20th in Kansas City! Why? IF YOU CARE about the maternal health crises and believe midwifery is part of the answer, we must learn from past challenges. Common characteristics of closures include: Requirement of physician collaboration for hospital privileges. Unwillingness to approve evidence based practices. Inability to argue midwifery business value. Workplace climate that does not value midwives or midwife voice. Expert faculty will speak on issues that intersect sustainability. None will be more profound than the personal stories of two midwifery legends, Rita Pixie Laubert Ledbetter and Lonnie C. Morris, each working as full scope midwives over 30 and years and forced to close their practice. 👉We are bringing the truth to why midwifery faces barriers to scaling up. And US maternity care IS AT A CROSSROAD. 👉👉If you are ready to learn and influence change, bring a team! There is NO BETTER way to learn how than midwives, physicians, nurses and administrators sitting together in a conference and leaving with an action plan!
