Verbally abused "It's just my job" Physically abused "It's just my job" Racially abused "It's just my job" Above answers given to me over the last few years by frontline: cleaners, Security operatives, gateline operatives, revenue officers, window cleaners. When debriefing incidents, the fact that people now are resigned to accept any abuse as part of their job is so sad. It appears to me that those sort of unsavoury and totally unacceptable incidents are at an all time high, leaving what tends to be the lowest paid individuals in society to recieve abuse from the general public. WELL IT'S NOT YOUR JOB OR ANYONES TO COME TO WORK TO BE ABUSED The only way this changes is through education to our frontline to report and support where we can. If this post hits home to one person and improves one single interaction it has had its desired effect. Every interaction matters ........... Improving Roadway Worker Protection through Resources and Legislation The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) presents the Roads and Bridges webcast. The session addressed the issue of worker safety in work zones, considering the alarming statistics on work zone crashes and fatalities. The webcast was moderated by Ryan Curtis, who introduced Donna Clark, the Vice President of Education and Technical Services at ATSSA, and Alex Vuselich, the Vice President of Business Development for W.D Wright Contracting INC. Donna Clark stated that the three most common causes of work zone crashes are: 1. Work Zone Setup and Organization. 2. Driver Negligence. 3. Road Debris. The session covered topics such as situational awareness, incident response, and steps organizations can take to create a “Culture of Safety.” ATSSA has created a Worker Protection Toolkit, which includes resources such as incident response checklists, training guides, and a work zone terminology guide for new employees. The organization is also developing training specifications for traffic control technicians, supervisors, flaggers, and pavement marking installers, among others. The average hourly pay for a Pavement Marking Technician in the United States is $21.08 an hour. The goal of all these efforts is to create a culture of safety throughout organizations, reduce work zone fatalities and crashes, and mitigate risks. For example, the organization recently launched a training program for traffic control technicians that provides instruction on proper traffic control equipment operation, safety and communication practices, and job-site monitoring. Overall, the session was informative and offered valuable insights into improving worker protection in work zones. WD Wright is a family-owned and operated company that specializes in traffic control. They have been in business since 1977 and have worked with major companies such as Colbia Gas, Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, and Verizon. The company is dedicated to staying up-to-date with industry changes and ensuring Work Zone Flagger Safety. They have faced challenges in the industry, including drivers disregarding traffic control and the lack of penalties for such actions. However, the company has managed to overcome these challenges and remain a leader in the industry. They have implemented a number of measures to ensure the safety of Work Zone Flaggers, such as providing additional training and resources. They have also worked with government agencies to pass legislation that will increase penalties for drivers who disregard traffic control. As a result, they have proposed Senate Bill 614 in Pennsylvania to enhance penalties for those who disregard traffic control in work zones. They are also working on similar legislation in Ohio.

One thing that I have noticed since moving to Florida some 18 years ago is that corporations don’t know what actual job titles mean. Nor do they know what those individual positions functions actually are. For instance a Maintenance Manager is not a person who constantly goes out on the floor and performs maintenance. They are the person that is responsible for over seeing every aspect of that department. The same goes for a Maintenance Supervisor. They work directly under the Maintenance Manager to direct individual employees during the buisness days. Occasionally they can be expected to actually be hands on in repairs. Technicians are the work force personnel that do the actual brunt of all labor. Almost 100 percent of the times I see job post that have all 3 of these positions included in 1 offer. And to make matters even worse the pay that is offered from one position to the other is almost always at the technician level. Florida is about 15 years behind in the wage category as it is. I was in Industrial Maintenance and Installations for over 38 years. Started at the very bottom as a grunt technician on 3rd shift and eventually worked up to a Maintenance Manager position. The wages I earned in the Midwest back in the late 90s to 2007 to this date still more then what is offered here in Florida. $25 hr for a technician is a slap in the face in my opinion. I was making that 20 years ago. Now ask yourself why you are having to post openings every other month. Because you don’t offer whst your employees need to survive. So they go to a place that pays 25-50 cents an hour more. Just my thoughts on what I see and experienced throughout my career.

In 2023, our District experienced the highest collection year EVER of trapped mosquitoes in our 78 year history. Utilizing 3 seasonal employees and 3 staff members, countywide we collected over a quarter million mosquitoes (261,565 to be exact.) Twice, we collected over 20,000 mosquitoes within 1 week last year. Quite frankly, due to staffing shortages, our full-time staff has had to physically set traps instead of doing the job that is very critical to mosquito population suppression… mosquito pesticide resistance monitoring. Tired of all these nuisance mosquitoes in your area? Know someone that has free time during the summer looking to supplement their income? Do you take pride in leading the charge against the world’s deadliest animal? If you said yes to any or all of the 3 questions above, check out the link below.
San Joaquin County Mosquito And Vector Control District is looking for motivated and eager individuals to join our team this season. The job posting below is for any candidate who is available to work in a short-term/temporary support role. The video montage below demonstrates what is expected of our seasonal utility workers. Still have questions? Feel free to visit our website, www.sjmosquito.org, for more information. Job applications for this position can be found at https://lnkd.in/gM_C_ieg
