Even back then, it was clear that Suraj wasn't just another entrepreneur. A sobering 2017 CB Insights study found that 97% of hardware startups fail, this resonated with me and absolutely needs to be improved upon. I'm now entering the final throes of my part time executive MBA course and over the next few months will be looking to survey and potentially interview middle managers, senior managers, owners and supporting service providers associated with businesses developing new physical products or systems. I'm seeking to explore: ▪︎Common themes experienced by hardware technology startups who have been unsuccessful or are struggling to validate and commercialise their technology. ▪︎Delivery vehicles and ecosystem experiences (e.g. grant funding, accelerators, incubators etc.) and those most likely to yield success in terms of impact on such firms. I'm interested in what does and doesn't work, global initiatives and best practices will be explored, with a view to identifying recommendations for local deployment. The project is not sponsored by any organisations, it is borne from my own personal experience and interest. I'll be developing the initial survey over the next month. The focus will be on your startup's strategy and business model evolution before, during, and after COVID-19. Your insights will contribute significantly to understanding the resilience and adaptability of startups in these unprecedented times. #iwasasked How can you evaluate the scalability of a start-up? My responses: The scalability is possible to be evaluated by: 1. How strong is the market research, and do more than 60% of respondents mention they are willing to pay for what the startup will offer. 2. What is the TRL : The technology readiness levels(TRL) are important to understand the scalability of the solution. It can't be too fast or too slow to the market, from a solution readiness perspective. 3. Founders Fatigue : have there been too many pivots and iterations for the founders to be fatigued in scaling up the final offer. Once the above are sorted, GTM et al takes on. The assumption is that the problem being solved by the startup really needs to be solved, and its not a whim because the founders believe there is a problem.
