🚨 PMA calls on Slovakia's President to reject the controversial public broadcasting law, which could expose RTVS to political interference and censorship. PMA and other civil society organisations, media freedom groups, and media associations have long warned that the changes will make RTVS vulnerable to political interference and could result in it becoming a government mouthpiece. In a statement, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) called the decision “a blow to democracy and independent media in Slovakia”. 💭 “It is a black day for the independent public space in Slovakia. It is a dark day for the media space in Slovakia. And it is a black day for civil society in Slovakia.” – RTVS CEO Ľuboš Machaj. Read our statement in full 👇 https://lnkd.in/e-Af7yER

📰 In this news article from UNESCO Caribbean, we take a look back at PMA's recent #MediaLiteracy bootcamps for Caribbean educators and journalists. The bootcamps, conducted on 6 and 13 June for media professionals and on 21 and 24 June for educators, were designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to navigate today’s complex media landscape. The sessions also strived to strengthen relationships and understanding between participants. 💭“This bootcamp is truly crucial in preparing you as educators to address these challenges. And by doing so, you can have a really key role in fostering more peaceful Caribbean schools and, of course, more peaceful Caribbean societies. [...] And as you realise, this effort, of course, aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on quality education, peace, justice, and strong institutions,” said Mr. Paul Hector, Advisor for Communication and Information at UNESCO Office for the Caribbean, at the opening of the bootcamps for educators. 💭With Facebook showing it's not afraid to shut down its news tab, what does this mean for laws that are trying to persuade it to fund #public #interest journalism? As more countries consider similar regulations to the #NewsBargaining Code in Australia and the Online News Act in Canada it is a question on many minds ... 🗣‘The question however is not just how best to distribute such funds for public interest outcomes but whether this will, in the longer term, address the dangers to #democracy of unaccountable global tech companies and their growing influence over public opinion.’ Associate Professor Fiona Martin at the University of Sydney delves into this subject as part of her article - Bargaining codes: Do they have a future? 🗄This piece is part of our series of #Research Insights, a collection of articles written by leading researchers & academics from around the world, especially commissioned for PMA and the International Association of Public Media Researchers (IAPMR). 🇳🇿 New Zealand's coalition government last week said it will press ahead with legislation to force tech giants to pay news organisations for their content. The future of the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill had been uncertain, having been introduced by the former Labour government, but broadcasting minister Paul Goldsmith confirmed it would go ahead, with amendments. “I have looked closely at the design of the legislation and will be changing the approach to align more closely with the Australian digital bargaining code to give all companies greater certainty,” Goldsmith said.
