🎤 Before any interview, it’s crucial to prepare thoroughly, regardless of the interviewee’s level of expertise. The role of the press relations agency is not only to facilitate brands in engaging with the media, but also to ensure that the spokesperson has all the necessary tools for a successful exchange. 🚨 When confronted with a journalist well-versed in the subject matter, an unprepared interviewee will struggle to appear knowledgeable. The reporter may, for example, begin by trying to elicit responses from the interviewee regarding the proposed angle and questions. Alternatively, he/she may choose to end the interview if answers are lacking or interest in the topic is not demonstrated. 🚀 The only way to avoid these pitfalls is to fully immerse oneself in the contents of the PR Briefing. This guide should be considered as a handbook or safety net that ensures the interviewee meets the journalist’s expectations and maintains credibility. 👍 Our objective is to present you with strategies that express a different viewpoint and enhance the relevance of your media-focused communication tools. This practical guide focuses on the content of the PR Briefing or interview guideline. Ready to take your communications strategy to the next level? Public relations? Are you kidding me? Putting yourself out there can be terrifying. But it doesn't have to be. Not if you talk about your expertise. Not if you talk about things you are 100% confident on. And if you have someone there to coach you through media interviews. And to put your thoughts onto the page. PR could be exactly what your business needs. 👉 To attract more clients. 👉 To get ahead of the competition. 👉 And to bring in more revenue. Still think we're kidding you?

B2B PR | Comms Strategy & Execution | Thought Leadership | Content 📢 Let's help you break out and stand out in B2B Tech 📢
Here are three ways to set your executive spokesperson up for failure: 1. ⚠️Offer them up as a spokesperson before they are ready. ⚠️ It’s always exciting for PR folks when an exec joins the company with new opinions and a unique point of view but shoving them into the limelight before they’ve had a moment to catch their breath is a recipe for disaster. Give your spokespeople a moment to understand the company better and talk with customers, get up to speed on messaging and understand your comms goals. You’ll have a better outcome all around. 2. ⚠️Force a topic into a planned interview. ⚠️ If an editor is requesting an interview based on a specific topic, it’s because they are likely working on a specific story. I promise that shoehorning your agenda outright into a story isn’t going to end well. Reporters get frustrated when things get too far off track and are less likely to come back to you as a resource for a follow-on piece. If your spokesperson can in fact talk about the specific topic but would rather talk about their new hot button, consider how you can bridge the discussion. Alternatively, the best time to talk about that tangential topic is at the *END* of the interview. Reporters will often ask if there is anything else to cover. You can mention that it might not be fit for this piece but something you’ve been thinking about a lot is topic X and would love to discuss later. Remember, the goal is to secure coverage within the story in front of you but to also build a relationship for the long haul…and the stories to come. 3. ⚠️ Don't prep them (especially when they say media interviews are "no big deal!") ⚠️ You’ve likely had this experience. An exec claims to be so media savvy that they don’t need a prep call or to read any briefing materials. Those folks are in fact the most dangerous to the story outcome. Let me give you permission to push back on your executive spokespeople. Start by outlining (briefly) why you need to follow a prep process and why it’s important for this interview to go smoothly as possible. Maybe offer up an anecdote about just how badly it can go without a proper pre-brief (I know you've got disaster stories to share - no names please!). Strategic counsel is a huge part of our job as PR pros and yet it is often underrated (and under valued in contract scope), but the media relations element gives PR pros an opportunity to demonstrate in real-time just how valuable this skill can be. 💎 📣Bottom line: Prep or perish.📣 #mediarelations #mediainterview #PR #techPR

[blog] “The PR profession vastly undervalues interviewing expertise. It starts in college. “Try to find a curriculum for mass communications or PR that offers a class on interviewing. “And once you’re in the working world, whether your role sits in-house or at a consultancy, you’ll find the same absence of how-to-interview training for PR professionals.” — Lou Hoffman, The Hoffman Agency ✍️🗞️ #publicrelations | #storytelling | #interviewing 👍👌🗣️ | O'Dwyer's Public Relations News 📰
