Groups or Teams? Want to know the difference? Think of groups as collections of people doing their own thing. Like in: 1)sales teams, or 2)individual sports, this means, 3)success is based on personal accomplishments. On the other side, teams are in: 1)team sports, or 2)the SAS: Special Air Forces, this means,  3)everyone works together for a common goal, and success is shared. Most groups and teams are: 1)a mix of both that we call hybrids, so, 2)people have individual and team goals, and  3)leading them requires different skills. We can help guide this process. "My team members seem to lack initiative and are just going through the motions." If I had a pound for everytime I heard this or a version of this, I’d be milking it 🙂 There can be many different reasons why an individual is not able to perform how you want them or expect them too.  And each case should be approached with the respect it deserves. That said, in my experience there are some common denominators when it comes to a team or employees lacking what feels like motivation or ownership to you. I would suggest that at the heart of many performance issues is a simple, yet profound disconnect: “If I’m not sure what I do matters, why do much at all?” In other words, why pour your heart and soul into something if you can't see its value or purpose? When people understand how their efforts make a difference, they're more likely to engage deeply and take pride in their work. I am sure people have seen from my other posts that I talk alot about Purpose and Vision and how to create these in your business from the very beginning. That is the first step towards creating the mechanism to bring meaning and purpose into people's work and individual roles. It is not just a theory or nice to have, it is the foundation on which you will be able to grow your business if anyone else is to be a part of your business. Once you have that in place and a system to keep it alive, you can start looking at how you transfer that to individuals and align your team.
