Call for submission of abstracts for GSA Connects 2024 Topical Session T83. Groundwater Pollution with Arsenic and Other Geogenic Legacy Contaminants, Related Health Risks and Management: Advancing Learning through Geospatial Tools, Machine Learning, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence. Rationale: Research carried out over the past decades has resulted in a massive collation of data concerning the presence, distribution, mobility, fate, and transport of arsenic (As), fluoride (F), and other potentially toxic geogenic contaminants in groundwater basins worldwide. These data have proved to be of immense help in addressing the challenges of an adequate and safe drinking water supply and improving public health concerns locally and globally. The large amount of data generated over these decades offers us an opportunity to revisit them with an ambition to enhance our data analysis capability for both generic and site-specific characterization of contaminants in different groundwater basins. Predictions on the public health risks of these geogenic contaminants in groundwater basins, as well as their potential impacts on public health, can be improved significantly through a combination of re-evaluation of the existing data and various proxies of environmental determinants, such as the climate change impacts and real-time monitoring. Geospatial tools have a strong potential for data analysis and water quality predictions in unexplored areas and mitigation strategies. The session aims to advance learning by providing a platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building. Researchers, practitioners, and students will benefit from insights into the latest methodologies and technologies employed in the study of groundwater pollution and health rist assessment. This knowledge transfer is essential for building a skilled workforce capable of addressing the challenges of geogenic contaminants. Beyond understanding the issues, the technical session emphasizes practical management strategies for mitigating groundwater pollution. By incorporating geospatial tools, machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence, participants will gain valuable insights into designing effective and targeted interventions for contaminant removal, water treatment, and public health protection. The session aligns with the broader goal of advancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and promoting innovative solutions for the sustainable management of groundwater resources. The abstracts submission deadline is 11:59 p.m., Pacific Time, 18 June 2024. This is a hard deadline so please make sure that you submit your abstract before the deadline.
