Bukola's story is a reminder that people can, and often are, experiencing more than one type of violence at the same time. At CommonSpirit, we implemented a systemwide Abuse, Neglect, and Violence policy to ensure that our facilities are adopting procedures that equip providers and staff to identify and respond to patients who may be experiencing any type of violence, including, but not limited to, domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month; please share Bukola's story with your team of health professionals and allies. https://lnkd.in/gFkin7Qv

It's #DomesticViolenceAwareness month and more times than not, healthcare providers find themselves overwhelmed by the burden and threat that intimate partner violence (IPV) has on their patients and family. IPV impacts 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in their lifetime. This includes physical violence, sexual violence and stalking by a current or former intimate partner. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, more than 10 millions people are abused by an intimate partner annually. It's also estimated that over 15.5 million children are exposed annually to adult domestic violence at home. This is why IPV screenings are important. Interventions through screenings help improve the health and safety of victims. In the video below, domestic violence survivors share their interactions with healthcare providers - what was done well and what could have been done differently. Healthcare workers are on the frontline of patient advocacy. Together with compassion and understanding, we can make a difference in the lives of others. Thank you, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute for advocating for these victims and bringing light to this issue. #SharedHarvest #Heartwork #DomesticViolence #Medicine #Healthcare #PatientAdvocacy https://lnkd.in/gbuYW7WN
