Age-gating social media is hugely popular. Over 80% of adults believe parental consent should be required for social media, and almost 70% want platforms to limit the time minors spend on them. This week on the No Mercy / No Malice newsletter: https://lnkd.in/efmRSjR4
The addictive power of social media poses a serious threat to children, as do age-appropriate objects such as alcohol or firearms. Implementing age restrictions is important to protect young users from these risks. While conventions say that proof of age is complicated, the real issue lies in the availability of benefits. Changes in incentives through the possibility of regulation may force companies to prioritize safety management over profitability. By holding these actors accountable, we can create a healthier online environment for children and ensure their well-being Just as we regulate other potential harms, social media needs similar scrutiny. The focus should be on protecting our youth from harmful influences and promoting a safe, responsible digital landscape. But, the biggest challenge lies in where do we draw the line?
It’s the money. Your new favorite, SHEIN, is responsible for a significant portion of Meta’s bottom line. The company’s founder, Chris Xu, is an SEO genius. “Influencers” who receive free merch, host online “reveal” parties to show off their “hauls” on Tiktok and Instagram. Their audience includes lots of teens, especially girls, who are particularly vulnerable to the manipulations of social media. What was once merely a dark art has, with AI, become a commodity designed (not to get too biblical about it) to trigger envy, covetousness and gluttony. You have railed against the data grabs of TikTok, well check out Shein and Temu… This post is a little dated, but has some good links, including one to Ken Pucker’s HBR article on Shein: https://jaginsburg.substack.com/p/fashionably-foolish-brilliance-bargains (it’s a free substack so you can click through without subscribing)
We had to ask to use AOL. And we had to get off whenever someone called the house. And they had three tiers. 12 and under, 13-17, and 18+. Too much jail baiting going on. If I want to sign up for a service to just make some friends, everything 18+ strictly is directly porn related. Then men try to act like that how EVERYTHING is supposed to be but they dont tell you they private parts dont even work anymore because of that very reason lol. I will not be in the company of that misery. I’d rather be celibate and know I’m ready and can perform than to be so active in these streets my second head stops working.
As a parent I try to be the one that sets those limits. Some success there so far, but we have good relationships with our girls.
Nobody needs Internet or cell phones. We need clean air, clean water, whole foods, and a safe home. I say we ban them from mining natural resources and it will solve these other problems that MEN have created.
Yes! Let’s do it already, Scott! I love how you call out the CEOs of these companies who have all the data and know they are actively harming kids for profit. They know that requiring government-issued identification and imposing a minimum age restriction would solve many problems associated with social media (e.g., bullying, doxing, trolling, etc.), BUT it would also mean less revenue. So, shareholders would never go for it. 🤦🏻♂️
Fascinating insights and solutions. Social media clearly has an impact on the mental health and lack of connection with our young people. I am a fan of age limits and phone free schools, which could be a game changer.
10000% Age gate it and do it now. These companies could absolutely figure this out easily if they wanted to. They choose not to.

2wThe only way to solve this problem is to FUND alternatives instead. Fund before and after school care, youth sports, third places, camps, groups, and stop expecting moms to solve every problem that MEN have created.
