I am currently in Adelaide for the #TheMHS2023 conference and absolutely loving every minute of it. The trouble with conferences is there is so much information to absorb and so much I want to share but unfortunately there is only so much I can write on a LinkedIn post! One of the highlights for today was the breakout session by Lived Experience Australia on the effects of loneliness for those with lived/living experience of mental health and their carers. Having previously worked for several years as a Neami support worker, loneliness was something many of our consumers faced on a daily basis. Finding connection whilst managing the changes (both short and longer term) that come with mental health challenges, is incredibly difficult. Many consumers were unable to work and lost work based social connections and often other relationships due to their MH struggles. The complexities associated with lived/living experience or as a carer mean it's not as simple as just getting out and being more social. It was interesting to hear that many of the report participants didn't live alone but identified loneliness as something you can experience even when others are around, the lack of true connections with oneself, pets, family or friends, can have a detrimental effect on one's recovery journey and can even result in suicidality. I was pleased to hear that many of the suggestions made for community and clinicians to help address loneliness, are supports that our teams provide to all consumers both in the community teams and at the Step Up Step Down services in WA. Check out the summary and full report in the link below. https://lnkd.in/ghBQzNG5

MY Mutual Ventures colleague Laura Power-Wharton has written about the need for public services to work together to support young people's mental health.
