Keep calm and KARI on! Lunchtime was near and my stomach was grumbling (and for some reason craving for curry) during the panel session discussing post-pandemic challenges in logistics at the Global Shippers' Forum organized by Malaysian National Shippers' Council and Malaysian Productivity Centre held on 5 September 2023 at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya. That prompted a spur of the moment formula dubbed KARI - short for Knowledge, Agility, Resilience, Innovation - to guide shippers to deal with disruptions and navigate through the VUCA landscape to ensure goods are move safely, securely, timely and cost effectively across supply chains. They must have solid KNOWLEDGE about the entire supply chain and make data-driven decisions, attain AGILITY to adopt to changes and accommodate a dynamic playing field and fluctuating circumstances, build RESILIENCE to withstand disruptions and respond to them swiftly and effectively, and inculcate a culture of INNOVATION to creatively solve problems, overcome challenges and exploit opportunities along supply chains.

“Is there scope for greater differentiation between services jobs, bearing in mind that some services jobs are essential, cannot be easily substituted with automation, and are not attractive to locals?” This para really stands out and hits a homer with me. After more than 10 years in public service and trade associations (TACs), working with companies of various sectors from #logistics, #supplychainmanagement, #restaurants, #foodandbeverage, #catering, #retail etc, we have tried various #productivity, #automation, #progressivewagemodel #pwm, #ITM, taping on NTS (https://lnkd.in/gfN4CKp5) initiatives, to address manpower shortage issues, but with limited success. While all policy intents are for the right reasons and we applaud many initiatives which focuses on leadership roles in an organisation, we need to sharpen the implementation, as not all roles in these service oriented sectors are the same. Regardless of sectors, these roles are not aligned with the aspirations of our next generation and continue to be shunned by locals - last mile drivers (for both logistics and f&b/catering sectors) and stuffing/unstuffing/repacking manpower of containers. If PWM can be sectors and occupations (#OPW) focused, can we also review and consider having foreign worker (FW) quota targeted at specific roles in these services-related sectors? #SGLogistics - We Orchastrate Every Move Singapore Logistics Association Container Depot and Logistics Association (Singapore) SAAA Singapore Singapore Transport Association Restaurant Association of Singapore Association of Catering Professionals Singapore (ACAPS) Singapore Nightlife Business Association Singapore Retailers Association

The presence of foreign F&B companies has been growing and in demand in Malaysia. Take Mixue as an example, it has risen to dominance in a short period of time. So what are some aspects of this phenomenon? Pros: -> Economic development: Increased foreign investment, local job opportunities, and government revenue 📈 -> Global recognition 🌍 Cons: -> Food security: Increased competition between local and foreign F&B companies -> Cultural appropriation: Risk of food acculturation That said, having foreign F&B helps grow our economy and gives us additional palate. While this might pose competition for the local scene, underlying is actually huge collaboration opportunities between local and foreign to increase local traditional food exposure and interest in their region. If you are a local F&B, this would be the best time to consider your expansion. Let’s discuss more on Malaysian consumer preferences and behaviour before you collaborate with foreign F&B: https://lnkd.in/g8Emi4Hn #marketresearch #opportunities #foodandbeverages #oppotus

Just to announce that besides my role in Secret Recipe, I have recently been elected to serve on the councils of two important associations in the country for the new 2024-2026 term, alongside key influential business leaders within the industry. Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) was established in the year 1992, with a vision of uniting all Malaysian Retailers as a single community in addressing concerns as a resounding voice, and to use this platform to engage with various organizations such as the Government agencies, societies of interest to form collaborations which benefits our Members in all fronts, with more than 550 Members representing over 40,000 outlets, providing more than 400,000 job opportunities in Malaysia and abroad. Malaysian Consortium of Mid-Tier Companies (MCMTC) are the key driving force behind the Malaysian economy and are defined as companies with annual revenues of between RM50 million and RM500 million in the manufacturing sector and between RM20 million and RM500 million in the services sector. As of 2021, there are approximately only 15,000 MTCs in Malaysia, which is only 1.7% of all registered companies in Malaysia. In brief, MTCs employ 16% of the nation’s workforce while contributing 40% of the nation’s GDP. Looking forward to do what I can to work alongside our council, members, government agencies and the overall industry ecosystem as a whole to grow and build our nation.
