Transgrid, the operator of New South Wales' electricity transmission system, highlights the critical need to enhance system strength as the state transitions from coal to renewable energy sources.
💡 Key Insights:
“Our power system is undergoing a high-velocity transition,” says Transgrid Executive General Manager of Network Marie Jordan. With coal plants retiring and renewables rapidly connecting, we face unprecedented challenges to maintain system security and reliability.
💡 The Transition:
- Coal Exit: 14 GW of coal power generating capacity will close by 2030 in the National Electricity Market.
- Renewable Surge: The future power system must handle up to 100% instantaneous renewable energy.
💡 The Solution:
To replace the system strength lost from retiring coal assets and to unlock additional renewable generation, Jordan emphasizes the need for large-scale investments in diverse options.
Transgrid’s call to action underscores the importance of strategic investments and innovations to ensure a robust, reliable, and renewable energy future for New South Wales.

Shout it from the Rooftops - There needs to be significant technical investment with an early "Showcase Project" for systems validation at the Customer/Distribution level to efficiently accommodate and optimise both existing and future Rooftop PV + Storage, plus significant Embedded PV + Storage growth with optimisation of existing distribution infrastructure - all required to manage network/substation energy swings, customer services changes, and EV integration.
A constrained distribution supply system will choke the transmission supply system, an optimised distribution system will reduce pressure on the transmission system.
What's missing - Do we need the "Queensland Electricity Commission" to provide overarching technical and cost management focus?

French renewable energy and storage developer Neoen is set to make history by nearly tripling the size of the Collie battery in Western Australia. Once completed, the battery will become the biggest in the country, helping to flatten the growing solar duck curve and fill in for coal. This achievement is a significant milestone in the transition towards renewable energy and battery storage in Australia, a country that is leading the way in this sector. #renewableenergy#batterystorage#Australia
Progress doesn't move in a straight line, but it does move forward. This is an important step in the acceleration of the delivery of clean renewable energy, which AEMO says is the best way now to keep energy prices down and get new supply online as quickly as we need it.
