I have no idea where any of these candidates stand on any issue. They're just names on signs. Is that enough? Sure, if your name is Trump, Biden, or Bernie, a ton of background and history pops into mind. You've established your identity and built your brand. The signs are great reminders. But for most others, it's nothing more than plastic with printing on it. Candidates must say who they are, why they're running, what they stand for, and what they intend to do. That's how to establish an identity and give people a reason to vote for (or against) you. In 30 or 60 seconds, repeated as often as possible, we can help build that brand. Somewhere around 2010 I was schooled by one of my pals, Jim Grannan. I've written about him before. Jim is the CMO for Hawaii Sea Spirits. At the time, he was serving as the head of Creative Services for Brown Industries in Dalton. If you haven't heard of Brown Industries you might be interested to know, their founder, James Brown, invented the carpet sample. If you have ever shopped for carpet you've interacted with a sample card or handle board that was first envisioned by Mr. Brown. James, a print rep, cooked up the idea when one of his flooring clients complained about not having a good way to show samples. Jim stopped me in the hall and said, "Bill, we're talking about ourselves all wrong. We talk about manufacturing. We talk about printing, displays and sample building. We should be talking about innovation and creativity. We help customers sell their product. We help them with ideas. Then, we can walk into the plant and make it for them." He went further. He talked about interacting with the different departments. He talked about collecting bids, asking for prototypes, paper samples etc. He talked about exploring possibilities with the gatekeepers of the different plants and departments (some easy, some difficult). He said, "customers want to sell stuff. They want to focus on how to move merchandise. They want to see ideas that excite them and they want to feel like they're talking with someone that is going to help them. They want to hear about possibilities not problems. Surely we can manage expectations without saying no to everything." He went on to say, "how we manage details & questions tells prospects much more about us than our marketing or sales calls." Jim was (is) right. How reps and companies manage inquiries tells clients more than websites and collateral packages. It's so simple! Another friend of mine says it this way. "we have the opportunity to throw gas or water on every situation. We want to throw water on problems and gas on opportunities. We want to extinguish one and accelerate the other." I share this because I'm having lots...I mean lots of conversations about sales growth. Managers need higher margins and more sales. Bidding an ever shrinking universe of mature projects is depressing and eventually fatal. Leaders can see that. We can turn the tide by being "Idea Enablers." We can immerse ourselves in why our customers print and how they sell their stuff. We can help them be better by asking questions and by sharing ideas. We can raise our value by helping them sell their stuff. That's what Jim was trying to tell me. That's what James Brown did in 1954. Every single one of us can do the same thing. Don't become a bid slinging robot. Be a partner and help your clients with the real problems they face. They will share what keeps them up at night if you ask. You will raise your value. Thanks for the education Jim. Prayers for you and your coworkers on Maui. It's so sad to see what has happened there.
