Once again, it's National Apprentice Week and today is Apprentice Wednesday! Most of you will know about my passion for apprenticeships, starting my career as one three years ago and working on Arup's Early Careers Welcome Programme, including enrolling our apprentices onto their courses! They are a fantastic option for anyone, regardless of age, who wants to develop #SkillsForLife whilst gaining experience (and earning a wage of course). This years apprenticeship opportunities are now open, and here's a few tips and some knowledge from me, a previous apprentice: Do your research: look at the apprenticeship standards and see if they align with your development goals; read about Arup, our projects and our culture – are we something you want to be a part of? Take charge of your own career: when you start an apprenticeship, you have the opportunity (to an extent) to shape it to what you want. If an opportunity arises that takes your interest, be proactive and go for it! You get out what you put in: the more willing you show, the more you will develop – this applies to both project work and networking. Put yourself out there and raise your profile, you never know what it could lead to! By doing this, I’ve been able to work across a number of teams and develop a variety of skills and knowledge that I will take through the rest of my career – I’ve also made some great friendships along the way! I enjoyed drawing houses, buildings, villages, parks and streets, amongst other things. I had no idea that an Engineer could also work on the urban environment. I changed my mind after I attended talks in secondary school about prospective jobs.
