☝️(In case you missed the first part, link is in the comments below…) 2️⃣ The second thing that holds good businesses back from success in Asia Pacific is a reluctance to invest in an uncertain or unspecified outcome. Not too long ago, I’ve been invited to a strategic director-level meeting where the message from the top was: “We can invest in anything as long as we know what we get out of it.” 📊🥔🔥 That happened after more than 8 months of pushing excel sheets around between different stakeholders like a hot potato, and still not satisfying the leadership’s requirement for certainty of their ROI. A case like many I have encountered over the years. 💰Particularly when you come from a different cultural background, in Asia you have to invest in a number of things before you even have a realistic picture of your opportunities in the markets: Time and money for e.g. information, which is often not easily available on a mouse click, networking, which is key to success, and even a regional presence to demonstrate commitment and gain credibility are well invested early on, even long before any revenue is in sight. 💸⁉️ The resources spent for such things are certain, the outcome might often be very different from expectations. During my time I have also met a number of Asian businesses which stood in front of a similar unknown outcome when expanding their business overseas. Yet, I noticed that Asians handle the unexpected with a much stronger commitment, and step over small losses faster (even with a good laugh) in order to get to the big win. 🎬 Having a plan with realistic expectations which includes “game money” that can be lost along the learning curve, is essential.
