There's an oft-cited stat from Pendo that 80% of software features are rarely, if ever, used. While it's impossible to know the accuracy of that, it's not hard to believe. I've been part of multiple feature factories, where emphasis was put on new features to 'claim' rather than taking time to ensure we've actually solved the desired problem before moving onto the next. On Saturday I had the extreme pleasure of joining ProductCamp Austin. I can't fully convey how much fun I had talking product nerd with some remarkable people. I was even lucky enough to give a shortened version of my "Together We Create" talk to a wonderfully receptive audience. I continue to be intrigued by how many product people ask me: "How does Community Driven Product Development differ from our product/customer advisory board?" The answer is simple: Product/Customer advisory boards tend to be feedback focused, one-off data gathering sessions at their core. CDPD programs are about integration and relational connection over time. One doesn't replace the other. One is not inherently better or worse than the other... they just serve very different goals with very different approaches.
