Time flew by at #bits23! I had a great time connecting with amazing individuals, but unfortunately ... I missed some long-awaited presentations. Hopefully, Verena Pausder and Lea-Sophie Cramer will come back next year! My 3 key findings that have brought so much fun and success in networking: 1. Go ahead and give new things a shot: I took part in speed-dating/matching events like Women in the Startup Eco System, which gave me the chance to meet some incredible folks. It was a cool way to step outside my comfort zone and expand my network. 2. Stay open-minded: The conference taught me how important it is to be open to connecting with people from different industries and professions. I realized that there's so much to learn from individuals with diverse backgrounds, and it's really broadened my perspective. 3. Networking feels sometimes easier with a beer in hand. Today was an extraordinary day, one I had the privilege of beginning with a visit to Kernelcon, Omaha's premier information security conference. The energy was palpable, and the air was filled with the buzz of innovation and the exchange of cutting-edge ideas. I was there for a very special reason, invited by Dan Browder to emcee a DEI-focused lunch panel aptly titled "Unmasquerade: Being Your Authentic Self." This theme resonates deeply with me, echoing the core message of authenticity I often discuss in my book and have personally embraced. Accepting every part of who we are, despite others' acceptance, is a journey of courage and self-love. In today’s session, amidst the backdrop of ongoing challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), I chose to spotlight the essence of our discussions: the foundational elements of humankindness and love. Strip away all the labels and titles, and that’s what you're left with—core principles that don't require any special recognition to practice. Each of us, regardless of our backgrounds or roles, plays a critical part in fostering equitable spaces where everyone can thrive. Today's lunch was a testament to moving in the right direction, a moment of collective acknowledgment and progress. Typically, diversity can be scant in such environments, yet today broke the mold. The diversity I witnessed among attendees was not just refreshing; it was inspiring, signaling a shift towards more inclusive professional gatherings. It fills me with immense joy to have been part of this event, and my calendar is already marked for next year’s Kernelcon. A huge shout out to the organizers and everyone involved in bringing Kernelcon to life. It’s gatherings like these that remind us of the power of community and the strength found in our shared commitment to making the tech world a more inclusive place. Being part of this was not just an honor; it was a reminder that when we come together to celebrate and advocate for our authentic selves, we pave the way for real change. Here's to many more!

The ‘Pet to Threat’ talk was written because it felt like it needed to be said. It battled to get out of my body. 🥷🏽 I wanted to be honest about how it felt to speak it, when I brought my reflections back to LinkedIn. Post talk…. I felt grim. 🤕 I put on really comfy joggers.🏃🏾♀️ I went home to hug my dog. 🐕 I drove to my mother’s house, who made me a herbal tea and toast. ☕️ Why wasn’t I looping Manchester drinking champagne at my own success? 🥂🍾 Well…… I was nervous when I got on the stage at Manchester Tech Festival, #WomenInTech [Unfiltered]. After the event, I got stuck. It took me a few days to process what I was feeling. 🫣 There is a vulnerability in public speaking, but when you talk your authentic truth to an audience that is curious to hear it, it can be very grounding. But I did not leave feeling grounded. I felt overwhelmed. 🤯 I was in no way prepared for how many racialised women in tech’s stories I was telling, when I spoke ‘pet to threat’ into a room of 300 people. I know I wasn’t ready because, when those women approached me after the conference (f2f, linked in posts, DM messages)…. I was bowled over. 👀 Logically, I knew that I wasn’t the only one. By it’s very nature, the research into ‘pet to threat’ tells us that this is a systemic issues that happens in a number of women and industries. But the ability for us all to think that we are the problem, even when the research tells us that it’s not the case. The exhausting loneliness of holding that as a thought pattern in our heads. It took time to work that through personally and to hold space for those women on the day. I would never regret that talk. I will talk it again. I do feel a sense of achievement. I do feel proud. This isn’t a humble-brag. 💅 But these talks mean looking hard and honest at our organisations…at the impact on individuals. 😳 So yeah, thats the truth of it.
