There are approximately 195 countries in the world. If we estimate an average of 1,500 politicians per country, this amounts to around 292,500 politicians globally. Using a higher estimate of 2,000 politicians per country, the number rises to 390,000 politicians. This means that politicians make up roughly 0.0037% to 0.0049% of the global population. Despite their small numbers, these politicians have significantly impacted our world in the name of development, progress, war, and unrealistic competitiveness. Unfortunately, their actions continue unchecked, leading to a future where our next generation may inherit only heat, floods, war, and suffering. When it comes to climate opinions, people are often reduced to "believers" and "deniers." But it's not that simple. I prefer what's called the six categories that the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication developed: 1. Alarmed: Know that climate change is caused by humans and support action. They are further subsetted into Inactive, Willing, and Activated. 2. Concerned: Know that climate change is a reality but think it's a distant issue. 3. Cautious: Have questions and doubts. 4. Disengaged: Lack exposure to the issue. 5. Doubtful: Doubt due to identity or ideology concerns. 6. Dismissive: Reject climate change as a hoax. The "dismissive" group are likely impossible to convince, so my best advice when communicating with this group is, "I'm sorry, you're wrong, and let's talk about something else." To engage with everyone else, start with common ground and be prepared to talk about the problem AND solutions. The 10 psychological responses to climate change I’m awfully sorry for the Yale Program, but I strongly believe there are 4 categories missing: 1. Resilient: Able to withstand and survive the consequences of global societal collapse. 2. Combative: Ready and eager to fight, disrupt and demolish. 3. Rebellious: Show the desire to resist authority, control and convention. 4. Confrontational: Dare to say that we’ve waited too long, that it’s too late, that collapse is immanent. 5. Alarmed: Know that climate change is caused by humans and support action. 6. Concerned: Know that climate change is a reality but think it's a distant issue. 7. Cautious: Have questions and doubts. 8. Disengaged: Lack exposure to the issue. 9. Doubtful: Doubt due to identity or ideology concerns. 10. Dismissive: Reject climate change as a hoax. We should already be way past being ‘alarmed’. Because this year — 2023 — is the year we passed ‘the elbow’ of the exponential curve. We should be way more confrontational and rebellious, even combative to a certain degree, to get the message across that societal collapse is immanent. And we must get resilient too, real fast, because suprasystemic collapse as a result of overshoot or overconsumption (*) is now locked in. Beware, the perfect storm is coming. (*) Environmental pollution, destruction of the biodiversity and climate change are symptoms of overshoot or overconsumption: when a population exceeds the carrying capacity of its habitat. Overshoot is not just beginning. It’s been going on for over half a century now and currently in its accelerating phase. Overconsumption is always met with collapse; it’s locked into the system. For us that implies the suprasystemic collapse of the global infrastructure.
