A recent study published in Annals of Surgery evaluated the quality of narrative feedback in surgical residency programs at Queen's University. Analyzing 3,900 assessments over five years, it was found that only 57% of these feedback entries were of fair quality, with an average Quality of Assessment of Learning (QuAL) score of 2.22±1.39. The study highlights that feedback quality did not significantly evolve over time (r=-0.067, P=0.402). Factors impacting feedback quality included the attending's role, the assessor’s and learner’s concordant specialties, and the timing of assessment post-encounter. These findings suggest a critical need for ongoing faculty development to enhance the effectiveness of formative assessments in competency-based medical education programs. How is it possible that I’m able to dance (albeit carefully) to my man Marvin Gaye just a little over two weeks after surgery?! It’s possible in large part due to the power of continuous applied learning and development in the medical field.
Among the many things I was grateful for in 2023, getting not one but two hip replacements are high on my list. And I can’t help but marvel at how far these joint replacement surgeries have come over the years, enabling people to live active and longer lives.
Maybe it’s because I’m in the people and organizational development business that I can’t help but notice and appreciate all the ways applied learning and development over the years has contributed to my positive experience and surgical outcome. I appreciate that my outcome was built on all the learning from early approaches, mistakes, and triumphs in the vast and interconnected network of human, technological, and organizational fields that make up the way we experience modern medicine.
From the precise images of my degenerated hips to the technology platforms that walked me through each step of the pre- and post-surgical processes to coordinate scheduling and insurance coverage to the robotics and instruments that enabled my new hips joints to the way doctors, nurses, medical assistants, physical therapists, and operations staff have learned to work together in organizational environments designed to prevent, reduce and mitigate mistakes while fostering human dignity, respect, psychological safety, team work, and a good measure of levity, I have continuous applied learning and development to thank.
Of course, modern medicine and the legions of people that make up this vast field are not perfect, far from it. But it’s so important to acknowledge and appreciate just how far we have come and how much better our lives are because of all the ways we continuously apply learning to enable people and technology to work together to improve our quality of life.
So, I want to say a big thank you to Dr. Stuart Melvin and his team at Washington Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, all the staff at Sibley Memorial Hospital, and Phoenix Physical Therapy for your commitment to continuous learning and growing because to a person and collectively, you all made it possible for me to enter 2024 with two happy hips!
I’m excited to hear your stories of how your commitment to individual and organizational learning and growth is bettering the lives of the people and communities you serve.
