[Part 3] P2: Are you comfortable with statistics questions? Me: Told that I have studied Statistics in the past but i do not use it actively in my current role. P2: Suppose that the life of a machine is normally distributed with a mean of 10 years and standard deviation of +/- 2 years. What do you understand from this statement? Me: Answered P2: Do you read any business magazines? Me: No P2: Name any 3 business magazines. Me: Couldn’t remember any P2: Which source do you use to read business and economy news? Me: Told that I mostly consume YouTube videos for business and economy news and read THE HINDU newspaper. P2: Did you follow the recent interim budget announcement? Me: Yes P2: Which number in the recent budget caught your eye? Me: Told CapEx allocation of 11.11 lakh crore. P2: NDA government says that we have allocated 11.11 lakh crore as CapEx in 2024 vis-à-vis 3.xx lakh crore allocated by UPA in 2014. Can we say that the NDA has done way better than UPA in terms of CapEx allocation and development just by looking at these numbers? PS: Start of the new academic year at IIM B was celebrated with the Inaugural Run 2024, a 24-hour walkathon. Medals were given to participants who covered at least 5 kilometers over the 24 hours. I was recently asked by one of my juniors what the vision of my organization (IEEE TEMS IIM Indore) is. This was the first time anyone had asked me that. It got me thinking. I had never actually thought that far ahead. I mostly took up the role of President because it gave me the opportunity to lead while at the same time facilitating a communication channel between the cutting-edge research done at IEEE and the budding managers here at the institute. It also got me thinking as to why all educational institutes have students handling key responsibilities. And then it struck me. Ever since I have become the IEEE TEMS President my outlook towards the world has changed. I analyze things at a much better level. I won't say I started using technology in everything I do because that is quite self-evident in my background (shoutout to all engineers reading the post). What I mean is I am able to resolve conflicts better, manage stakeholder expectations better, incorporate feedback and of course not to mention enjoy the little moments of joy with my team. I doubt all of this would not have been possible without me being in the position I am in. Coming back to the question my junior asked me, my short-term vision for the IEEE TEMS IIM Indore Chapter is to gain visibility across campus. I want to make it an inclusive society not only in terms of gender but also in terms of being accessible for people with disabilities. For this, I am glad to have Ashutosh Goyal Prachi Singh join us. The perspective brought by these 2 is incredibly unique and so are their ideas for transforming the organization. Moving on to my long-term vision, I wish our chapter becomes the hub of activities that encourage more managers to embrace technology rather than to consider it as merely a data analysis tool. For that, I believe we need to focus on long-term engagement through workshops, conferences and seminars. To get this transformation done I am pleased to welcome Shashank Srijan Tushar Mehta Mayank Gupta Gaurav Bisht Tanmay Santosh Siddhant Kishore SWATHI KRISHNNA. Together these smart, intelligent people will put together the next-generation training programs piggybacking on the research done at IEEE. They will of course be mentored by an amazing team of people namely Saima Ali Syed Ali Abbas Rizvi Debasish Behera Uday Reghuram Naveen S So in conclusion do I have a small answer to where do I see IEEE TEMS, IIM Indore Chapter 5 years from now? No, I don't. But I guess it's about the journey that takes me there after all Strategy is an analysis of events that happened in the past. Who knows, we might actually create a difference. The significant increase in enrolment rates in places like Madurai, Nagpur, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore, Jodhpur, and Lucknow is a clear indication of the growing demand for these skill sets. It's commendable to see edtech platforms like Great Learning and UpGrad playing a crucial role in facilitating this upskilling journey. I agree with Hari Krishnan Nair's observation that this drive to acquire new skills is fueled by a competitive job market and stringent selection processes for entry-level roles. Classrooms across the IIMs are getting more academically diverse with the inclusion of students from backgrounds like humanities, commerce, science, and law, reports The Economic Times (ET). The ratio, which once saw a higher participation from engineering students, is undergoing a transformation. Two non-engineering students account for every five students at the IIMs in Ahmedabad, Kozhikode, Indore, and Kashipur. And non-engineering students make up for 30% and 17% of the overall count at IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Bangalore, respectively, the report adds. To attract students from diverse backgrounds, IIM-Calcutta introduced an academic diversity factor for bachelor’s degree. And in the last two batches, the diversity ratio improved from 8% to around 23-25%. The institute has extended this factor for post-graduate and professional qualifications for the 2023-25 batch. Previously offering six points of academic discipline diversity factor (DFa) to non-engineering students, IIM-Kashipur has changed it to four points this year after improving the ratio to 47.25%. These points are offered to ensure fair representation in the MBA programme, the institute’s chairperson-admission Abhradeep Maiti shares. While the women representation at most IIMs is 30%, IIM-Kozhikode and IIM-Indore have the best scores on both the academic and gender fronts, the report says. These B-schools are also tweaking their curriculum to better prepare the leaders of tomorrow, shares another ET report. IIM-Ahmedabad is focussed on including case studies about working in remote and hybrid work settings. This is being done to equip students with the demands of an evolving work environment and meet the recruitment criteria of companies during campus placements.
