To stream or not to stream - how do Olympics fans in the UK/US plan to watch the Paris 2024 Olympics? 💡 In my last post I looked at the most eagerly anticipated sports for this summer’s Olympics, so this time I thought I’d check out how fans plan to watch those sports, and how this is evolving over time. Lately, it seems everywhere you look we’re being told that streaming is taking over, and traditional broadcast TV will soon be left behind. Based on this, you’d assume that many Olympics fans plan to view on their local streaming services. However, a recent GWI report suggests that TV is still king, for now… In the UK and US, around 5 in 10 internet users plan to watch the Paris 2024 Olympics live on TV 📺 , compared to just 2 in 10 who plan to watch live via streaming 💻 . This is a surprising stat, especially when you consider that an average Olympics produces around 10,000 hours worth of content (source: IOC, see link below), a volume which is far better suited to online streaming platforms than broadcast TV. Perhaps it is this wealth of content that’s caused the number planning to stream highlights online to grow by 12% since Tokyo. What’s most interesting to me is that the number of Olympics fans planning to watch live via streaming has declined, whilst the number planning to watch live on TV has grown since Tokyo 2020 (see chart). This is a surprising stat, but it’s important to note that these figures are based on intentions, not actions. It could be the case that when the Olympics rolls around, fans will be drawn to the convenience and additional features available on streaming platforms (such as Peacock’s purpose-made multi-view feature that’ll make its debut this summer). The new offering will be free to full subscribers, and will kick off at the start of next football season when their new EFL day of 1000 matches a year goes live.
