🔋 🌍 CATRIN enters a European project to develop batteries of a new generation The four-year project from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (#MSCA) programme started officially on 1 March and, under the leadership of Aarhus University, will involve European partners from Denmark, Germany, Spain, Italy or Great Britain, as well as colleagues from Hong Kong and China acting as associate partners. The principal investigator for Palacký University Olomouc is Radek Zbořil from CATRIN. 🗣 “Our task will be to test the possibilities of graphene derivatives for electrode modification. In the past, we have demonstrated high efficiency of chemically modified graphene in many energy storage systems including supercapacitors, lithium batteries, but also in modern Li-S batteries. In cooperation with foreign partners, we want to combine new chemical and physical approaches to improve the properties of #battery systems. Nobian will be one of the new residents on the University of Twente campus. Its research department will move from its current location in Deventer to Enschede next year. CEO Michael Koenig: "Innovation is crucial for us. The innovative and inspiring environment of Twente University is exactly what we are looking for. We already work with the university on a regular basis. By actually being present on campus, the cooperation will definitely intensify further. Not only with the university, but also with other parties in the area." Nobian plans to settle with about 20 researchers in The Gallery building, in the heart of campus. For Nobian's arrival, The Gallery is currently being expanded. Construction work for this has recently begun. The researchers deal with topics such as #salt extraction, salt #chemistry, #electrochemistry and #process #technology, but also focus emphatically on topics such as sustainability and the energy transition. They thus support Nobian's ambition to become one of the most sustainable chemical companies in Europe. The company aims to be climate neutral by 2040. This will also contribute to sustainability in the region, including by electrifying the salt production in Hengelo. Excited to announce the University of Adelaide has secured $5m Australian Research Council (ARC) funding to establish an ARC Training Centre for Battery Recycling, led by Professor Shizang Qiao, one of Australia's best researchers. The funding supports partnerships between universities and industry that will generate real-world outcomes and commercial opportunities vital to Australia's economic growth. Iondrive Technologies General Manager, Dr JC Tan said:   "This funding is a major milestone for IonDrive as the ARC grants are highly competitive and peer-reviewed, highlighting their significance. Our goal is to transform battery technology and recycling, moving closer to commercialisation. IDT and the Professors will together lead vital research for Australian battery recycling, particularly focusing on DES and its commercialisation.  This grant will also drive more IP and patents, potentially in collaboration with other universities. Critically, it is my belief that this funding will, in part, help to advance further research to improve the efficiency of IonDrive's Direct Solvent Extraction recycling IP, which is potentially a low-cost, environmentally friendly, highly selective method for the recovery of battery metals such as Li, Ni, Mn and Co." The Centre for Hydrogen Technologies (CTW) at Politechnika Gdańska University of Technology is one of the first interdisciplinary teams of specialists in Poland, where we combine chemical, physical, energy and IT competences. Our areas of activity include: fuel cell diagnostics, hydrogen storage, biohydrogen production and energy production and conversion. [RPI C&CB series: Meet the Department] This week's highlight: The Research Group of Prof. Chulsung Bae Professor Bae has been at RPI for 12 years. His research group is working on synthesis and characterization of ion conducting polymers that can play a key role in electrochemical energy conversion technologies. The active research projects include generation of green hydrogen by water splitting with electricity (i.e., electrolyzer), electrification of hydrogen with help of oxygen in air (i.e., hydrogen fuel cells), and conversion of CO2 to carbon fuels by electrochemical reduction with water and electricity (i.e., electrochemical CO2 reduction). His research activity focuses on not only fundamental understanding of polymer synthesis and property but also practical applications of polymer materials developed from research program.
