Exactly 25 years after the Copernicus Conference on #Sustainable Development, held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in July 1999, we came back to #Barcelona to find out about the development towards sustainability since then: Has there been progress made towards sustainability and if so, in what way? Barcelona is a good touchstone, because this wonderful city is facing enormous challenges which constitute pressure from various sides. Climate change and its impacts can be felt everywhere, #water scarcity, #heat stress, #overtourism, huge amounts of plastic waste, #housing shortages and a permanent #traffic gridlock are the biggest challenges to mention. In fact, 25 years after our hopeful consultations, progress towards sustainability is barely visible. At best, we are only making slow progress on the road to transformation. Nevertheless, we learned about interesting approaches that still give us hope. Nevertheless, it has become clear to us that we need to make much more of an effort. #barcelona Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Josep Enric Llebot #sustainability #universities solutions4climate

When we talk about sustainable societies, what comes to mind? 🌱 You may think of cities where air feels cleaner, people recycle and water is conserved. If you came to that conclusion, you're right; in fact, studies conclude that the most sustainable countries are those that made 360° improvements involving everything from sanitation services to energy supplies. Today we find more and more countries willing to make significant changes for the benefit of the environment. And the truth is that I am excited to see how they are carrying out this mission through educational efforts that encourage better behaviors in every single person. Lately, I've been reflecting on Rome's strides toward sustainability. From my perspective, both its citizens and visitors must play a pivotal role in nurturing the city's holistic well-being throughout its sustainability journey. Now, who should we look up to? The leading countries in terms of sustainability are Norway, Finland, Austria and Sweden. How? Thanks to initiatives such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the use of public transport over private transport and the reduction of fossil fuels. If I share with you their success stories, it’s not to compare but to inspire: Knowing the steps they are taking can help us improve and learn from best practices, in Europe, Latin America and beyond. 🙌🏼 #Sustainability #Innovation #ESG #Impact #Lawyer

GREEN CITIES 💚 - The panel discussion at #greencitiesmlg yesterday was "How to Make Your Low Emission Zone a Successful Project." Low Emission Zones can be a political hot potato and require careful planning to avoid inefficiency, high costs and unpopularity. Our panel of experts discussed the design, implementation and optimal functioning of low emission zones across Europe and the importance of modeling solutions such as those offered by Aimsun to achieve these aims - get in touch with Josep Maria Aymami and find out more. FIRST OF ITS KIND IN EUROPE!!! Huella Verde Mallorca, as we think, offers a contemporary blend of living, working, leisure and shopping, with an agenda to make a difference on this planet. Recognizing the needs of the islanders and many foreigners who live here, we began promoting an initiative of “Silicon Valley” sustainable eco-development that offers a new way of working and living: 120 energy-saving innovative eco-houses with working space for eco-startups, entrepreneurs and other creative minds. An ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community using local participatory processes to holistically integrate ecological, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of sustainability in order to regenerate social and natural environments. The motivation for ecovillages is the choice and commitment to reverse the gradual disintegration of supportive social/cultural structures and the upsurge of destructive environmental practices on our planet. For millenia, people have lived in communities close to nature, and with supportive social structures. Many of these communities, or “ecovillages”, exist to this day and are struggling for survival. Ecovillages are now being created intentionally, so people can once more live in communities that are connected to the Earth in a way that ensures the well-being of all life-forms into the indefinite future. Ecovillages are one solution to the major problems of our time – the planet is experiencing the limits to growth, and our lives are often lacking meaningful content. According to increasing numbers of scientists, we have to learn to live sustainably if we are to survive as a species. The United nations launched its Global Environment Outlook 2000 report, based on reports from UN agencies, 850 individuals and over 30 environmental institutes, concluding that “the present course is unsustainable and postponing action is no longer an option.” Ecovillages, by endeavoring for lifestyles which are “successfully continuable into the indefinite future”, are living models of sustainability, and examples of how action can be taken immediately. They represent an effective, accessible way to combat the degradation of our social, ecological and spiritual environments. JOIN US:huellaverde.mallorca@gmail.com https://lnkd.in/dVreFWDZ

Revolutionizing Sustainability In an era where sustainability is a pressing concern, the Huella Verde Mallorca project emerges as a beacon of hope, paving the way for a harmonious coexistence between humanity and the environment. This visionary endeavor presents a novel European model for settlements, one deeply rooted in the cultivation of a distinctive ecosystem that not only sustains its inhabitants but also nourishes the surrounding populace. The brilliance of this concept lies in its potential for global replication. As the vision extends beyond the shores of Mallorca, it adapts to the idiosyncrasies of various regions, resulting in settlements endowed with distinct characteristics that harmonize with their environments. This synergy between the population and its natural surroundings catalyzes a symbiotic relationship—a thriving collaboration that spawns products attuned to local climates and terrains, and gives rise to localized technologies. What emerges is an interconnected tapestry of innovative ventures, each uniquely tailored to its locale, each contributing to a growing network of "lighthouse" settlements. These settlements, standing as beacons of progress within their respective nations, breathe life into neighboring cities and regions. Over time, this interplay between settlements births a global network, facilitating the movement of inhabitants across geographical borders. The ensuing exchange of knowledge and insights fosters a continuous cycle of growth, propelling the development of societies and safeguarding their prosperity for generations to come. In essence, the migration between Huella Verde Mallorca's settlements, which span the globe, becomes a conduit for the transference of wisdom—a bridge connecting disparate communities in a shared journey toward a sustainable future. The concept transcends mere sustainability; it becomes a fulcrum for advancement, an embodiment of collective potential and a testament to the power of harmonizing with nature. As Huella Verde Mallorca lights the way, the world watches, inspired to forge a new path toward a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow. Joun us: Huellaverde.mallorca@gmail.com https://lnkd.in/eXpPF4uZ

Did you know Valencia has been named the Green Capital of Europe for 2024? This award acknowledges its green credentials and ambitions for the future… ♻️ With over 500 acres of gardens, they’ve pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030. ♻️ Already they have a “socialised solar plant” funded 80% by its citizens, 20,000 streetlamps along the seafront with smart lighting and lamp posts that doubling as charging points for electric vehicles. ♻️ Now, looking ahead, they’ve over 400 projects planned to further expand their green approach, including 3 new walking, and cycling routes. Cities alone generate 70% of our global carbon emissions, housing 56% of the world’s population despite covering just 3% of our total land area 🌍 Therefore, initiatives like this are important to drive sustainability, encourage recirculation of resources and help progress decarbonisation in those big cities. So, how green is your city? And if you’re interested in understanding your carbon footprint, get in touch… 📩 #Sustainability #CarbonFootprint #GreenCapital
