In the spirit of making communities healthier, UP Health System - Portage is proud to share news of the recent donation of our former Water Street property to Copper Shores Community Health Foundation. This has been a long process that was recently finalized, and it is expected to have a positive impact by helping secure more space for community health programming opportunities facilitated by Copper Shores. The space currently houses Copper Shores Meals on Wheels and plans for upgrades and improvements for that program are already underway. While other plans aren't finalized, many potential opportunities could be brought to life in the space to further support the health and well-being of our community. We're very thankful for this strong community partnership and are happy to support new development in our hometown through this land transfer. Thanks to TV6 & FOX UP for talking with CEO Ryan Heinonen about this project. #MakingCommunitiesHealthier #CommunityPartnership #Donation

July 1 – 7 is Clean Beaches Week. In Michigan, we're fortunate to have 3,300 miles of Great Lakes shoreline (plus a lot more with inland lakes), and with that access comes the responsibility to recognize the impact our actions can have on our environment. With the busy summer season and holiday weekend upon us, here are a few simple actions you can take to celebrate our many beautiful beaches and help to keep them clean, healthy and safe for all now and into the future: ✅ Leave no trace — properly dispose of trash and recyclables ✅ Clean up after your pets ✅ Avoid single-use plastics and don't bring glass to the beach ✅ Reduce your carbon footprint by walking or riding a bike to the beach ✅ Volunteer for a beach cleanup What's your favorite beach in the UP? #CleanBeachesWeek #LeaveNoTrace

Nothing says the 4th of July like fireworks! As we head into the holiday, UP Health System - Portage would like to remind everyone of a few safety tips for handling fireworks to ensure a safe and fun time: ✅ Light fireworks one at a time, then move quickly away from the device. ✅ Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap. ✅ Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. ✅ Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks. ✅ After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, douse the spent device with plenty of water before discarding it. Surrounded by her family and medical team, Jessica marked an important milestone in her cancer treatment last week through a swift motion of the hand. The sound of UP Health System – Portage’s new symbolic bell in the Cancer Care unit rang out and the joy in the facility was palpable. She was among the first patients to have the opportunity to ring the bell in celebration of a significant milestone in cancer treatment. For Jessica, it marked the conclusion of eight rounds of chemotherapy. “Being able to stand in front of my family, former coworkers and the wonderful Oncology staff to ring the bell is something I will never forget,” she said. School’s out and it's officially summer! Living in a colder climate, we all tend to switch to high gear and pack our limited hot days with outdoor fun when summer hits—beach days, barbeques, family reunions, boating, camping, firework displays and more. It's truly a great thing to live in such a beautiful place with access to so many recreational opportunities, but it's always good to slow down and remind ourselves of the dangers that come with it and what we can do to protect ourselves and our families from harm. Topping the list of summertime hazards are extreme heat and drowning. The good news is that heat-related illness and water dangers, along with many other seasonal hazards, can be avoided—read the summer safety article linked below to learn how. #SummerSafety #UP #OutdoorRecreation
