The Nigeria National Decade Committee (https://lnkd.in/dVa8r3-x) is glad to partner with the International Ocean Institute – Nigeria (IOI – Nigeria), and the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) in organizing some events to commemorate and celebrate this year’s WORLD OCEAN DAY coming up on the 11th of June 2024. 8th of June was a day set aside by the United Nations to highlight the importance and challenges facing “Our Ocean”. This year’s event is at NIOMR Headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria with a Public Lecture on "BLUE ECONOMY: BALANCING ECONOMIC GROWTH AND OCEAN HEALTH". There will also be awards of prizes to winners of the Essay and Craft Making Competitions from some selected schools. UNESCO – IOC – Nigeria National Decade Committee stakeholder group is established under the directive of the UNESCO-IOC through the office of the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM). Our mission is to participate in all UN Decade Of the Ocean Science for Sustainable Development activities, strengthen connections within Nigeria, and weave partnerships in communities working to study, conserve, and sustainably use the ocean and its resources.

It is a great privilege to publish the article 'Statistical evaluations of sea’s state along the Nigerian Coast' https://lnkd.in/dbJUVQrj. Statistical evaluation of sea’s state is essential for the design and management of marine structures, operations, shipping and navigation security. For coastal navigation, little to no research has been done on the state of the sea along the Nigerian coast. Understanding the local sea state can help to lessen the frequency of incidents brought on by ships capsizing. To notify users of probable areas where vessel overturning may occur. Essential for a sustainable Nigeria"s blue economy.

Our view on the numerous challenges faced by developing countries when it comes to actively participating in deep-sea exploration and the way forward.

It is a great privilege to publish the article Pollution Indices and Ecological Risk Assessment of Major Elements and Trace Metals in the Marine Sediment of the western Nigeria continental shelf, Gulf of Guinea. The study seeks to assess the spatial distribution, pollution levels, and ecological risks associated with major elements and trace metals in the sediment core of the Gulf of Guinea basin. The findings from this study will serve as a preliminary baseline chemical composition for rational ecological protection measures off the Nigerian coast.

Good experience from ISA CTC application. That is the advantage of the practical ISA CTC training programs compared to the virtual ones. The practical ones will give you more experience, I suggest the virtual ISA CTC training be abolished although the excuse then was based on the pandemic .

The African Deep Sea Research (ADSR) Expert should be integrated into any activities that involves Deep sea mineral exploration and exploitation in Africa in order to contribute more on the applications of their experience and knowledge to the development of African continental shelves and deep sea environments. Alumni groups should be created for all ISA trainees for an effective progress monitoring , engagement and feedback. Other ocean networks such as Partnership for Global observation of the Ocean (POGO) are doing this.
