🕷️ Interesting Facts About Spiders You Might Not Know! 🕷️ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gGCuZV5q Spiders are truly fascinating creatures with some incredible abilities. Here are some detailed facts about them that will blow your mind: Diverse Species: There are over 45,000 known spider species worldwide, and they inhabit every continent except Antarctica! 🌍 Super-Strong Silk: Spider silk is one of the strongest materials in the world, being 5 times stronger than steel of the same diameter and incredibly flexible. 💪🕸️ Limb Regeneration: Spiders can regrow lost limbs during their molts. This amazing ability helps them survive despite facing numerous threats. 🦵🔄 Mostly Harmless: While most spiders are venomous, their venom is generally harmless to humans. Only a few species, like the black widow and brown recluse, can cause serious harm. 🏥 Unique Hunting Techniques: Not all spiders rely on webs. Jumping spiders actively hunt and pounce on their prey, while trapdoor spiders create hidden burrows to ambush insects. 🏃♂️🍽️ Sensitive Setae: Tiny hair-like structures called setae cover spiders' legs and bodies, making them extremely sensitive to vibrations and air currents, helping them detect prey and predators. 🔍 Breathing Systems: Spiders have unique respiratory systems, including book lungs and tracheae, which allow them to breathe efficiently in different environments. 🌬️ Orb-Weaver Webs: The classic orb-shaped web, made by orb-weaver spiders, can capture various prey, from small insects to larger creatures. These webs are often rebuilt daily. 🕸️ Parental Care: Some spiders, like the wolf spider, exhibit remarkable parental care, carrying their egg sacs and even their spiderlings on their backs until they're independent. 👩👧👦 Environmental Indicators: Spiders are crucial for indicating environmental health, as their presence and abundance can reflect the conditions of their ecosystems. 🌿 Next time you spot a spider, take a moment to appreciate these incredible creatures and their vital role in nature! 🕷️✨ #SpiderFacts #Nature #IncredibleCreatures #Wildlife #DidYouKnow #Ecology #SpiderLove #NatureLovers #interestingfacts

I touched on damselflies and dragonflies in my last post so thought I'd look into them a bit more today. Five ways to tell them apart: Bodies: damselfly's long, thin and fragile looking; dragonfly's are chunkier Wings: both have two pairs of lace-like wings – damselfly's are all the same size; dragonfly's - the back pair of are usually shorter and wider than the front pair. Both are able to take off and land vertically, hover and fly backwards Eyes: damselfly's two distinctly separate eyes on the sides of the head; dragonfly's – two massive eyes the join at the top of the head Resting wings: damselfy's tucked in close to the body; dragonfly's held away from the body Flying: damselflies are weak fliers and rest frequently; dragonflies are strong, fast fliers that can fly long distances Damsels and dragons need water as part of their lifecycle – they lay eggs on the stems and leaves of aquatic plants or directly into the water or mud. Eventually the larvae will hatch and there is a wide range of how long the larval stage lasts – from a few months to five years. Once ready to move on to adulthood, the larvae sit in the shallows for a few days breathing air then climb up a plant where the adult breaks out of the larval shell. Damsels are likely to hang around the pond, whereas dragons will roam further afield – both return to the water to mate and lay eggs. Males can get territorial. They both feed on smaller insects but will also eat other damsels/dragons. They are themselves eaten by birds, spiders, frogs and newts. Pretty and mesmerising to watch. Worth putting even a small pond into the garden just to watch them. https://lnkd.in/eFB2b69w 📷 Stimmungsbilder1 via Adobe Stock #245527180 #damselfliesanddragonflies #damselflies #dragonflies #britishinsects #gardendesigner #landscapearchitect

The Lyrebird is by far one of our country's most interesting animals. Here are some of our favorite facts about them. 1. They are most notable for their impressive ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment, from barking dogs to car alarms to mobile phones. Sounds whacky but it's real! If you haven't seen it we strongly recommend some YouTubing. 2. They sing throughout the year, but the peak of the breeding season, from June to August, is when they sing with the most intensity. During this peak males may sing for hours of the day, almost half the hours of daylight. The song of the lyrebird is a mixture of elements of its own song and mimicry of other species. 3. Male lyrebirds call mostly during winter, when they construct and maintain an open arena-mound in dense bush, on which they sing and dance in an elaborate courtship display performed for potential mates, of which the male lyrebird has several. 4. Lyrebirds are ancient Australian animals: the Australian Museum has fossils of lyrebirds dating back to about 15 million years ago, and are capable of living as long as thirty years. https://lnkd.in/g9c6byKy #australianwildlife #lyrebird #liferocks #connectingchildrentonature #learningthroughplay #nature #naturelovers #naturegram #natureplay #earthscienceteacher

Feathers are amazing structures. But after about a year, constant use and exposure to the elements mean they have to be replaced. So how do you replace the roughly 20 feathers in each wing that are essential to flight? Many species — such as this Common Raven — molt just a few feathers at a time so they can still fly. But waterbirds like ducks and loons molt all of their flight feathers at once. As a result, they’re earthbound and vulnerable to predators for a month or more — until their full suite of feathers has been completely restored. https://lnkd.in/gGstTPa5
