Autonomous Charging for Swedish Ferries Operational in 2026! Zinus AS and METS Technology have unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize the charging infrastructure for Swedish road ferries. Their collaboration will bring forth a fully autonomous charging tower in Finnsbo, Sweden. This tower aims to streamline the charging process for vessels operating on the road ferry route between Finnsbo and Skår. The tower will supply up to three megawatts, which is the equivalent capacity of 12 fast chargers for cars! 🚗⚡ Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, is electrifying its ferries as part of the Vision 45 plan for a climate-neutral ferry service by 2045. We are delighted to introduce a new outcome generated as part of the Autoship H2020 project! Within the project, our coordinating team at CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO conducted an assessment of the #externalcosts associated with autonomous shipping, specifically focusing on the Autoship H2020 #IWW use case study. The #CostBenefitAnalysis provided by Marco Molica Colella and Anastasia Azarko from CiaoTech - Gruppo PNO shows that autonomy, combined with greener ship designs, offers financial gains, increased cargo capacity, safety improvements, and emission reduction and facilitates a modal shift from road to inland waterways, intercepting additional demand. Thus, comparing autonomous ships to trucks, waterborne transportation remains more sustainable in terms of external costs. Want to learn more?
