Although many brands have committed to increasing gender diversity in the fashion idustry, progress toward fixing it has been slow. Luxury industry is women centric yet there have been cases of gender equality. Brands talk about being diverse and having gender neutral places to work but from designers to CEOs we’ve seen male employees holding majority of these positions. Thank you Susanna Nicoletti for calling out Valentino on their recent "achievement" in gender equality and shining a light on the gap between PR and reality. Valentino has proudly announced their Gender Equality Certification, courtesy of Bureau Veritas Group. But their top tier is an all-men club. CEO? Man. CD? Man. CFO, COO, CMO, CHR? Men, men, men. 🤔 It also prompts a couple of other head scratchers: - Firstly, why are we being asked to applaud a "pay gap of below 10%"?  A pay gap once recognised can and should be instantly corrected. If you only narrow it, you’re effectively saying, “I acknowledge that your value-add is exactly the same as your male counterpart, however I’m still going to pay you less. Feel free to thank me for not being as unfair as I could have been.” - And Bureau Veritas, what were you thinking? There should be no ‘Gender Equality Certification’ awarded until there is PARITY. Maybe call it a 'Slightly Less Unequal Than Last Year Certification’ if you like, because that’s what it is. Gender equality is not about ticking boxes or flaunting a certificate. "Everybody is welcome" Sound very familiar to you? Yes, it is, usually many companies or organizations use this phrase when talking about the topic of being LGBTQ friendly. Saying "Everybody is welcome" always is a good start, but true inclusivity goes beyond words. It requires tangible actions, like implementing equality, diversity training for staff, and creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ travellers. How about: "We warmly welcome LGBTQ+ travellers." It's direct and straight forward while conveying inclusivity. To express more direct and specific welcome to LGBTQ+ tourism, phrases like "We celebrate diversity and warmly welcome LGBTQ+ travellers", "We are committed to being a safe and welcoming destination for all LGBTQ+ travellers" or "Welcome to our destination, hotel, restaurant, where we celebrate and respect the diversity of all gender identities and sexual orientations" can be used in your web page or social media channels around all year and not just in "pride month" It is important to remember that LGBTQ+ travelers travel all the time and not just once a year...like June. It is important to make LGBTQ+ tourism more visible because it promotes inclusivity, diversity, and acceptance. By actively supporting and promoting LGBTQ+ tourism, we can create safe and welcoming spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals to travel, explore, and enjoy their experiences without fear of discrimination. Additionally, highlighting LGBTQ+-friendly destinations and businesses can contribute to economic growth and cultural exchange. Embracing and celebrating LGBTQ+ tourism helps to foster a more inclusive and compassionate society for everyone. For the past month or so I've been running a series of review calls with my amazing With Pride committee, going over the planning activities for our key period in the year, the Pride season. In our calendar, the first big day of the year that we mark is today, May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia, or #IDAHOBIT2024. This is a day of reflection, action and celebration. It is a day of reflection, where we remember the efforts we've made to achieve greater equality, and acknowledge the violence and discrimination that the #LGBTQIA+ community continues to suffer today. It is a day of action, where we look at the path ahead and plan our next steps to achieve greater levels of inclusion and belonging, working towards creating a better world, starting with our workplace. It is too a day of celebration, where we proudly represent our multiple identities front and centre, and visibilize all the range of colours of the LGBTQIA+ lived experiences. We have been planning for weeks, and our efforts have paid off well. An online post in our internal newsletter site launched the whole #Pride2024 season across all regions of The Stepstone Group today, the result of an intense, collaborative group effort. This includes a series of events introducing the concepts of LGBT+ Allyship and Safe Zones across a variety of regions, cultures, time zones and languages. The agenda also contains time to reflect on the actions we've taken so far to continue creating a workplace that works for everyone, everywhere. Additionally, we're planning a grand celebration of Pride at the end of June to really showcase that We Are Radically Inclusive, our main guiding value across Pride season. And the agenda and details are still not closed. The impact of the work we do here is big. We collaborate in developing a culture of growing inclusion everywhere. We support the building of policy frameworks that are intentionally inclusive, like our new Gobal Family Leave policy. And ultimately, we help empower our LGBTQ+ colleagues to bring their whole selves to work without fear of discrimination. Today's call with my dream team was, undoubtedly, one of reflection, action and celebration. Just like the spirit of IDAHOBIT and Pride. And so will be the many more that we'll continue to have.
