"An important first step to minimize implicit bias is to understand your own unconscious bias", advised Caralyn Cooley, former Amazon and Jet.com executive, and current EVP, Chief People Officer at Bowery Farming. Unconscious biases can influence hiring decisions, leading to unintended discrimination, exclusionary practices, and mis-hires. Harvard Business Review research found that candidates with "white-sounding" names are 50% more likely to receive interview callbacks than those with "black-sounding" names. The good news: we can mitigate bias with structured hiring processes to minimize subjective judgments and foster inclusivity, for example anonymizing resumes, diversifying interview panels, and providing diversity training.
